We’ll see. Only had the car a week before the data ran out so need it back, happens Sunday, and then can resume testing and workarounds.

One definitive learning is not to do Teams video calls using the WLAN!
IMO not distinguishing between tethering data usage and car data usage is such a rookie mistake by Porsche. Mobile phone and tablet manufacturers have figured it out a couple of decades ago. If you're going to make a mobile device on wheels, at least learn from the people who make the mobile devices.

Most data plans I've had in the last 20 years has separate limits (or lack thereof) for data used by the device (e.g. phone) vs. data used by other "tethered" devices (e.g. when the phone acts as a wireless access point). My current phone plan has unlimited device data, but only 50GB of tethering (called "hotspot usage" in today's vernacular).

In UK unlimited data means exactly that even for tehered devices - I use Vodafone but can see how some providers might choose to throttle.

Doesn't Samsung make the PCM...and a few mobile phones too?

Same, same. One of the best things about Vodafone, imo. That and its unlimited data across the EU – even tethering.

Ironically the inbuilt SIM and I presume therefore WLAN provider is Vodafone and it’s a +44 (UK) so how they’ve messed up the data and geolocation is beyond me.

I know a little bit about this as a friend is the CTO of the company. In Europe, Porsche is using an Irish company called Cubic Telecom (https://www.cubictelecom.com/) for connectivity. Which is a SIM that has favourable roaming agreements across Europe.

Cubic SIM's tend to connect to the "major" (usually former state telco) mobile operator in each country. So Vodafone in UK and Ireland, SFR in France, etc.

This way they don't have to do SIM deals with each country they sell cars in.

Not sure that Vodafone or SFR will agree to being referred to as the former state telco!

Oh, my bad. Defo true in Ireland. I thought SFR was in France.
Telecom Eirann later became Vodafone?

Vodafone is probably the worlds most successful private operator. Started in the U.K. back in the eighties I think. Very wide stretch as an operator.

O2 is the operator in the U.K., ex Cellnet, and was part of BT!

France Telecom, later Orange was the State operator in France. SFR is the private operator.

Anyway Cubic telecom have done a great job with the Internet of Things! And I think most of the trouble we have with the Taycan for Comms is back to Porsche and their involvement on the servers side.

O2 became Telefonica - I think only Vodafone is the sole remaining "UK" provider.

We consistently focus on the Taycan here but what about the PCM connectivity in the other models - suspect they behave the same for roaming data packages.

Since all is eSim now, I don’t understand why you still can’t share your mobile phone plan with the car, just like with any other device like your iPad. From a subscription perspective the car is just another device, rather than the Vodafone “in the car” extortion schemes. I also don’t get why the Tacayn can’t act like a wifi client. So that while on the driveway it can connect to your home wifi, for much faster updates. We now use the hotspot on my iPhone, so the kids have wifi in the car, but connecting via car hotspot would be neater imho.

If can do this but only on Russian spec cars (as per owners manual). It is blocked everywhere else - not sure why.

As for faster updates - hardly worth it given the low volume and rarely anything substantial (1 in 2 years). Therefore no need.

Porsche Engineering and Vodafone Business push 5G infrastructure

The proving ground in Southern Italy, which is owned by Porsche and operated by Porsche Engineering, now offers its customers a real-time communication network, which promises reduced delays, wider bandwidth, improved security and reliability, and faster deployment time. NTC thus further underlines its role as a leading technology partner for the integrated development and validation of intelligent and connected vehicles of the global automotive industry.

Update: drove back from the Alps yesterday. Data had reactivated Jan 8 and so we all settled in for the 1200kms with all toys connected and no iPads connected to the WLAN. Only the PRSE was linked. Boys switched on Netflix once near Albertville and the road stopped winding. 5 hours later they stopped working and a quick check on MyPorsche showed that the entire 7gb was used up not even halfway to Calais.

So basically Porsche have sold a PRSE that can only run Netflix for 10 hours a month (5hours x2 screens). I am incandescent to put it mildly. What a pathetic amateurish self inflicted f up!

Sent an email to Smart Mobility with the update straight away. Shall see what they say.
