Looking for guideance on the use of professionally applied ceramic coating on a new GTS. What should I be looking for, any issues and general costs. I am currently looking at XPEL Fushion Plus being applied by a local dealer in either Tuscon or Scottdale AZ.

I know some people apply ceramic coating to PPF but I will not bother. I'm have STEK PPF applied to the whole car so will just protect this with a wax on a regular basis and save my money. This was the recommendation of the PPF installer.

We (Gtechniq) do a dedicated PPF coating (HALO).

Main benefit of it is to make the relatively soft PPF easier to clean. Will be most noticeable during bug season.

I am personally not a big fan of Xpel because of the need for a top coat. In my experience, SunTek is a superior product, has a 3-5 year top coat, and was recommended by my local dealership.

If you do go with Xpel, Gtechniq products are top notch. I use their cleaning products and interior protection products exclusively. I've never used their ppf top coat, but can vouch for their crystal serum. I've had both the light and ultra on vehicles in the past. Great stuff

I got this Xpel on my paint, wheels and calipers along with PPF. This is not an economical solution but it does offer additional peace of mind. In terms of what to look for, the key is in the paint correction (especially if you are doing a coating only). Look for someone that typically works on higher end vehicles. Really good shops will have a portfolio of work that you can view in person or online.

Great point! Installer is very important regardless of product used.

I believe STEK is the same and has an Hydrophobic layer so my installer says I do not need a ceramic coating.

I agree with your installer. The average person can get by with PPF only (with regular maintenance). You have to be a little more “obsessed” with paint finishes to appreciate the additional value that a coated/PPF car would provide. I did it because I am just such a person. Most people aren’t and given the expense of it all, I dont think it’s worth it for most people. You can put PPF on a car without paint correction and it will look really good. Your installer is wise to not push this. My installer didnt push it either to his credit.

My installer says they check the car under their lighting room they use for paint correction and will address any issues before applying the PPF.

They say this but the dirty little secret is that PPF covers up almost all light scratches and imperfections so they really don’t need to do much to give the customer a shiny car that doesn’t show scratches. This is the reason PPF alone can be so cost effective and is best for most people.

Good point. I will do my own inspection in the Porsche showroom and if necessary ask them to move their car to the light room. Thanks for the tip.

Please don’t let me turn you into a fanatic about this. There was a time when I knew a lot less about this stuff and there was so much less to be concerned about. The punchline here is that PPF generally equals goodness…full stop. Everything else is gravy.

I will recommend to use a PPF with ceramic already on. It will save you some money. Suntek reaction is precoated. Xpel was not and they asked me $1500 for ceramic coating in addition. I said no way.

What's the point of ceramic coating on the paint when the STEK PPF is hydrophobic so protects better than ceramic coating?

Or do you mean ceramic coating on the PPF?

Yes on the PPF. PPF will never stick on a paint cover with ceramic coating.
