Sudden lag during an overtake today. Is this normal?

I would bet that it’s due to the collision avoidance and when you floored it, the car considered the car you were passing was still impeding and then took off when you cleared fully. What you describe ACC does all the time.

By chance were you a little early flooring it?
I think I have experienced this. The car trying to make sure I don‘t collide with the car I am overtaking. Maybe the OP had a combination of this followed by the gear change

This is probably the worst part of this car. The casual "I just need a bit more speed" acceleration can have this stupid lag while the car shifts. The only way to avoid it is to stick in Sports mode at all times, but that has other issues.
What issues?

It does sound like the shift delay, which will be more mechanically limited than software.
I have noticed it myself overtaking in "Normal".

I expect it is even more noticable in the RWD since the acceleration will be zero during the shift whereas in the 4wd models the front motor will still be pulling while thew rear is shifting.

Mind you it is nowhere near as bad as a 911 turbo IME, which in similar circumstances has to shift down more gears and has turbo lag.

I just live with it now I know to expect it. The lag is nothing like as bad as an IC engined auto 'box car.

OTOH if it actually was something like collision avoidance actually nearly causing one in that circumstance "oh sh1t", throttle response is one of the main things I chose the Taycan for and overtaking like that is why.

PMFJI but for me there are a couple of things leading to me rarely bothering with "Sport".
The ride is markedly worse in and the lift off coast stops, both of which I don't want when driving around normally.

The downshift to first in normal mode is very quick and not something that would register as a real lag. However, the sensors on this car associated with ACC and collision avoidance are a bit imprecise.
I disagree. I can absolutely perceive (and very much dislike) the lag from downshift in Normal when I hit the accelerator hard. It is definitely faster and smoother than what I remember from test driving Taycans when they first came out, but still there. My previous EV had one gear only, so stepping on the accelerator produced instantaneous acceleration, no shift lag, so perhaps I'm more sensitive to this than you.

I notice the same “lag” on my Taycan. Only in Normal and Range modes. In Sport Plus I never noticed it. Instant full acceleration.

I have not read the whole thread, but a lag when doing an overtake is usually caused by low battery level.

Have you tried Sport individual? You can set that to whatever settings you want. FYI I use only individual mode as it has all the settings I need. Normally I drive in Norma individual, but sometimes change to sport.

Didn't read all the previous messages but it happened to me when I was driving in "normal" mode and the lag was the "Oh shit the driver wants the full power, lets retrograde to 1e gear". Now I'm always driving sport + mode and no more lag lol.

Ok so I tried to replicate this morning on a fast road and...

... I failed miserably ?

kept for 20-30 seconds at 90km/h (in second gear) then slammed the pedal and wrrummm no lag. Couldn't even feel the downshift which was odd. Ran out of road before experimenting more but tried at least 3 times.

I think it must have been a combo between collision warning and downshift. Really felt like that car didn't know exactly what to.

In any case, I'm prepared for next time. Won't catch me by surprise.

Sounds collision warning involved there I reckon based on experience. It does light up like an Xmas tree though...

I haven’t bothered to set individual settings.
The “Normal” works perfectly for me in “normal” conditions and Sport+ if I want more extreme response but I am rarely on a road which genuinely benefits from Sport+

Sounds like you were in normal mode and the downshift in gears when you accelerate hard. It wont happen in Sport or Sportplus mode. I tend to stay in Sports mode almost all of the time unless the road is really bumpy, when you forget and leave it in normal that downshift jolt is not pleasant.

From a RWD perspective I never leave without the stock Sport on. I found a noticeable difference between Normal and Sport. Just more responsive. Just something extra to do while pulling off, a first world problem I know.

I am not surprised since Sport leaves the rear motor in low gear up to quite reasonable speed and has faster throttle ratio iirc too.
I must try it one day!
