I've set up a home profile and a timer (to 85%) on my '22 GTS charging to charge preferably between 12am and 6:30am. I think it works, but I'm trying to see when it's ACTUALLY charging - here are screenshots of charging on 7/17 (from about 50% to 85%) and on 7/18 (a test from about 75% to 85%)

I think the charging times on the my porsche app are from plugging in the charger (on hold) to unplugging it. And the bar graphs don't tell me when it starts actually charging.

I understand that the timer works backwards from the departure time (for me, 6:30am) - so I'm trying to figure out how much charge I can fit in between 12am and 6:30am when rates are lowest (and I leave for work).

Am I missing something? If it's helpful, I'm using the PWCC charger set to 32 amps (wasn't comfortable with the 40-amp heat :) )

Thanks!

That's very cool - I didn't know the app showed the (home/L2) charging sessions..

A simple calculation yields ~40kWh (32A * .8 effective current * 240V * 6.5 hrs) - so a near-solid half pack. If you upped current to 40A, it'll get closer to 50kW. (And, in before @daveo4EV, you could/should upgrade to an EVSE that can handle 40A without warming up.)

Thanks - so it seems that if I want to charge to 85% during that 6.5 hours, I should try to start at not lower than around 45% charge to be safe...

Believe me, I've read WAY too much about other chargers and heating problems with the Porsche charger - I've had the car for less than 2 weeks - charger came with the car so thought I'd try it first :)

Something didn’t add up, as I’ve never had an issue reaching 85% overnight, so I dug up this from my EVSE’s history (recent charge at home, 40A, from ~20 to 95% SoC, charging interval set to 12-7am):
Porsche Taycan ACTUAL Charging History on My.Porsche? IMG_7825

(edit: in the above, the bulk of charging was done between 12am and 7am)

It feels like you should be able to get more than just 50% of SoC in your interval. (Also, 85% is more of a guideline, no need to reach it, especially on a daily basis. That is, you may worry about this a tad too much. ?)

Thank you - that's helpful! So, do you think that even though you had charging scheduled 12-7am it started at 11pm in order to charge to your set point?

And thanks about the 85% - I set that in the timer, and my understanding is that it works backwards from a departure time to see when it needs to start charging to reach 85% by the departure time. So I could set a different timer to 75 or 80% if I'm starting lower than usual...?

Thanks!

My home profile is set to a min of 30% - so upon plugging in it will charge until that point, irrespective of time of day. It'll then pause and wait for the beginning of the preferred charging interval (12 in my case).

You don't have to (meaning neither lower it nor reach it) - plug in whenever, charge overnight and drive off in the morning. :) That is, unless you really need the 85% on a daily basis, don't worry about what it gets to. I charge 1-2/week (if no trips), and let it go down to ~20%.

how did you get to that screen? I went to my account, but don't see an option to show that detail.

Thanks for engaging with this - feel free to stop reading now :)

I have a Home profile set to 25%, prefer 12-6:30am charging. I also have a timer set to 85% with 12-6:30am charging. My reading of how these work together is that without a timer my profile would have charging start immediately to 25% and would then start charging (again) at 12am and would charge continuously until 6:30am or 100% charge (whichever comes first). My timer tells it to charge between 12-6:30am only until 85% charge.

The 'rub' is that (maybe my misunderstanding) the timer calculates when it needs to start charging in order to reach 85% by 6:30am - and that might lead it to start charging the evening before (at a higher electricity cost), regardless of my time preferences in profile or timer.

So, if that's correct, I'm just trying to figure out what minimum charge I need to start with in order not start charging the evening before.

It's a first-world problem, so if you're still reading, feel free to :CWL:

I'm loving the car!

on the my porsche app, click on the picture of your car, then on the next screen ("Overview, Functions, Manual" across the top) there should be above it the name of your car (for me, "Ian's Taycan") - beside that there's an icon - it refreshes - mine now has those 2 z's in it, below. If you wait until it's done and then click on that icon, it should give you charging history

Hmmm mine just gives me a description for each state of that circle. I have just asked it to not show again and now it doesn’t do anything when I press on it

That must only be available to people who use a PWCC.

PWCC, PMC+ or PMCC - only stats for Porsche EVSEs are logged to my knowledge.

History is available from the Account option under Charging Equipment. Comprehensive data set and exportable.

You analysis and assumptions are correct.

On 32A you should expect 7.4Kw. This is good for 0.3 miles / minute.

6hr charging window with a target of 85% should easily be achievable from a starting level of 35% (perhaps lower depending) in my experience..

If the window isn't wide enough the charging session will start earlier to comply with your chosen target charge and departure time.
