For those of us who are math challenged, my consumption with the Porsche Performance Box and a full car (avg. 40 mph/65 kmh for 148 miles/238 km) was 2.5 mi/kWh, which equals 24.85 kWh/100km.

By comparison, a somewhat similar recent trip without the box (avg. 59 mph/95 kmh for 199 miles/320 kmh) was 2.7 mi/kWh, which equals 23 kWh/100km.

So, although the trips weren't fully equivalent (I got stuck behind a wreck for 45 min on the trip with the box), I took about a 7.4% efficiency hit, which isn't too bad considering the benefits.
What wheels do you have? I have 20 inch wheels and had 22.4 kWh/100 Km for a 950 Km trip 92 km/h average speed. Outside temp 34 Deg Celsius. Also fully loaded but with the Thule Vector M.

I have the worst ones for range: 22” carbon fiber blades. Also, for what it’s worth, I was not trying to hypermile, so while I used Range Mode, I accelerated briskly and drove as I normally would.

For reference, the best I have ever done (without box) is 3 mi/kWh or 20.7 kWh/100 km

Just finished trip and removed box and cross bars.

Still massively impressed. Today’s trip featured heavy, heavy rain, which I thought would have a much bigger impact on consumption, but it didn’t really since I just dropped from 2.5 to 2.4 mi/kWh. Impressive.

Still very quiet. At one point when not raining, I hit 105 mph and no material difference in noise. Just great.

As far as the 3M clear bra that I used to protect the rail, it worked, although the rubber straps marred the clear bra itself. I suspect that it marred because it didn’t have enough time to cure before the trip (4 days or so). So, it did its job, but I’m going to have a professional installer remove the 4” wide strips and replace them with 6” wide strips. I’ll do it soon so that it will have months to cure before I need to use it again, and I’ll let you know how it goes.
Hardest part was removing the box. My son helped me install it, but since we dropped him off at Uni, I didn’t have his help to remove. Tried to get my wife to help but it was too heavy for her. So I lifted it off of the car by myself. Lucky I’m not too feeble or weak, but I don’t want to do that again.

Anybody experience with the old porsche 530 roof box? I had it already on my cayenne coupe and would like to reuse it.

My new taycan st gts will arrive soon and I orderd the thule wing bars. Do you think that combination will work together with the old 530?

Any experiences?

Because I found the claws of my roof box too close to the roof I ordered the new 2022 Thule wing bar edge because it looks to be a bit higher.

It turned out it is only a mm or two. So not really a dig deal. I can just slide my finger between the roof and the claw which I couldn’t with the first.

I am still happy with the new ones. The fixation is clearly improved. The rubber straps now are attached with hooks which is safer. The hook fixing the inner part of the strap looks the same but attaches easier to the strap. The cover now slides on the foot where in the first version it was fixed only with the lock.

The black plastic is black nog in stead of greyish in the first version.

newly designed rubber on the bars and look sturdier.

any one hesitating between the two version: go for 2022 it’s better and improved.

I ordered black ones but the aluminum ones were delivered. They look good too and I needed them and did T have to time to send them back. Only 1 cm show anyway the rest is covered by the roof box.

Just installed the same cross bars today. Very happy with them. I didn’t follow the porsche recommended mounting points (dimples) and went a bit wider to get them to be levelled. I think it works with my race bike mount but i will have to move them closer together if I will be mounting my cargo box.

Hi TF- I need a little help. First, is PPF necessary with Thule Wingbars Edge?
Also, any advice on alignments? Use the Porsche dimples? Or not? Any help is much appreciated. Have a Vector M showing up in a couple of weeks.

I didn’t install ppf. When I took them off there was a bit of rubber on the inside of the roof bars. It is gone now after washing a couple of months. Wasn’t really obvious anyway.

for installing I used the dimples as a guide. And I measured the distance to make it perfectly leveled. Not really difficult. Do you have the last version of the wingbars? The attachment of the rubber straps is easier and more secure with the more hooked design.

I installed my vector M more on the back and adjusted to trunk to open a bit less. This should be better for noise.
installing the box just takes 5 minutes. The bars take more time for the first time. A bit figuring out. It took me 45 minutes. Better do it with two to position it in the fare side so you don’t hit the roof.

it is a really nice box. High quality and easy to use. Have fun with it.

So, I learned something from my last two uses of the bars. The first time, I had installed ppf to protect the rails from the cross bars. This worked really well BUT the rubber Thule straps damaged the film by twisting. I had assumed that the damage was due to an insufficient cure time for the film.

I removed the film and had scheduled it to be reapplied by a professional, but he cancelled before my trip. So this time, I used 2" blue painter's tape to wrap around the rail right where the rubber strap for the Thule cross bar surrounds the rail. It worked like a charm, protecting the rail and easily removable after the trip is finished. A very thin blue line of tape was visible on each side of the rubber strap (I'm probably the only one who would notice), so I have bought some black 2" painter's tape to use for my next trip. I will not be reapplying any ppf to the roof rails.

The reason for the post is that the silver roof rails show the locations of the dimles really well. Hard to see on the black ones.

Got the loaner again. Probably one of the rare CT’s with silver rails. It is a 4 CT they also optioned the silver exterior and Rhombus silver interior.

If necessary the Thule wingbars could both Be shifted a bit to the fron in order to have it leveled a bit more. If that would be of any importance. For noise Thule recommends to shift the box more backwards. Don’t know what would be best.

Hi All,

Has anyone here used both the Porsche cross bars and the Thule cross bars to compare?

I own both. I have only used the Thule because, intuitively, it seem like sitting closer to the car should be better for aero, and they look really nice. I also know they do not damage the roof rails.

I am tempted to sell the tequipment bars since they are backordered and I don't need two, but I was wondering whether my assumptions about the superiority of the Thule bars is accurate.

Has anyone owned both and compared performance between the two?

Is it worth it for me to try the tequipment (but if I do, they would no longer be new in box), or should I just sell them.

I would definitely test them if I was you!

I would like to know this too. I hear my roofbox above 100 kmh. I wonder if it would be less with the genuine Porsche roofbars. But not enough to buy them without knowing my self.

But probably better if you just sell them without trying for the value of the bars and risk of damaging your roofbars. ?

We have a two weeks trip planned next two weeks. We packed carefully and I hope I can manage without roofbox. Part of the trip is through Germany and the box limited my speed. Going to Istria and planned the Gross Glockner Hoch Alpenstrasse, Plockenpass end Timmelsjoch pass looking forward to it and will make separate report.

For the noise, move box back as far as possible and try to use something compressible like a pillow in the box to dampen vibrations. After doing this, I don't have noise really even at high speeds. I do have the performance speed box though, so I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

Safe travels.

Thanks ! It is as far back as possible on the bars. I can shift the bars back a bit. Will give it try if I have to put them on. Where do you put the pillow? In front or in the middle?
