You are not going crazy. The transmission noise is noticeably higher in my 22 RWD since last 12 months. I does not bother me as it is but it will if it becomes even louder.

There should be no gear shift at all in normal mode unless you stomp on the accelerator and cause a downshift to first gear. Sounds like something was wrong with your car and it also sounds like Porsche thought so too since you’re getting a new rear motor assembly.
There is a gear change on 4S even in normal mode if you drive after the car was parked and you had to reverse. Sometimes, this shift to second gear (which typically happens at around 15-20kmh for me) is harsh for me. I can definitely feel it. What is more harsh is setting to reverse after some driving. I can feel how it kicks the rear gear. I tried to wait for a short while so that it has time to engage the gear, but even that doesn’t always help - you press the accelerator and feel a harsh kick.

no idea if it’s bad or not for this car

I’ve never heard this before and I don’t have the same behavior in my Taycan. What would reversing the car have to do with starting in 1st gear when in normal mode. BTW… I reverse out of my driveway every day and my car does not use first gear in normal mode. I can hear the shift down to first if I switch into sport mode right after I start rolling forward. Maybe your car is behaving like the OPs car and needs a rear drive replacement.

So you say that if you set to reverse and back to drive, you don’t have this 1->2 shift at all? It’s always in the second gear, isn’t it? I wonder if it’s possible to verify what gear the car is on

I’m saying that after I reverse, I put the car in D and if the car is in normal mode it is in 2nd gear immediately. There is no shift from 1-2 at any speed after I start to accelerate. It will downshift from 2-1 if I push the accelerator to the floor but that is the expected behavior.

Also, my transmission is very smooth when shifting. No harshness or clunks at all.

In 2nd gear immediately? I thought that was only the case in Range mode.

My RWD starts in 1st always in Normal and only shifts to 2nd around 70kmh. Same in Sport, but then it shifts up around 100kmh.

There are many threads on this forum about the drive modes and gear shifts. Have a read through this one… https://www.taycanforum.com/forum/threads/2nd-gear.4085/

Everything I’ve read (and experienced with my own 2022 CT4) points to normal mode starting out in 2nd gear.

Thanks, I will read it tonight, but I’m 100% sure mine is starting in 1st in Normal mode always.
I don't question that at all. Hopefully the linked threads help identify an issue if there is one.

I checked on my 4S - stopped, put in reverse, then put back in drive and pressed to the floor - there was no gear change. So it starts on the 1st gear if the car was previously in the reverse.

on RWD it’s different, of course

Based on your post I went out to my car and drove around my neighborhood testing this out. I did about 10 reverse to drive transitions in normal mode. I paid as close attention as I could to try and detect a gear shift. The result... you are right, I was wrong.

Now to be fair to myself, I only felt a very minimal blip on a couple of the 10 attempts. The shift was very smooth, but it did happen. Also, the shift seemed to happen right at about 12 MPH.

Thank you for the corrected info.

So in normal mode, the expected behavior is starting in 2nd gear unless transitioning from reverse to drive. In that case the car will start in first gear and shift to 2nd at around 12 MPH unless you are really heavy on the throttle from your standing start.

I don’t say that I feel 1->2 change every time. It’s quite rare, but when it happens, I feel it (we all different and have different assmeters:D, so take it with a grain of salt)

btw, what I noticed that the car doesn’t like is when it wants to switch to 2nd gear and you release the accelerator- in that case, the gear change is quite noticeable
