Has anyone driven from Moab to Flagstaff in a Taycan?

My wife and I are heading from Denver to Sedona via Moab. The My Porsche app says there is a charger between Moab and FLagstaff but I am not sure I want to trust it; lots of desert and not a lot of charging options! Has anyone driven that route? I have a Taycan 4 CT, and my normal range is 240 miles from 100%. Do you have any advice? Otherwise we have to take my wife's gas guzzler! ;-). Thanks!!!

Assuming you started out by checking the recent reviews on PlugShare, were there not enough recent reviews to form an opinion? For example the 125 kW ChargePoint in Bluff AZ has a 10.0 user rating with several recent reviews, all positive.

I stopped once at flagstaff on my way to Sedona. It was the best ea 150kw charger. It was charging at 175kw.

You will not make the distance between Bluff, UT and Flagstaff in a Taycan even if you charge to 100% in Bluff and drive 40 or 50mph. The only way to make that distance is to stop to charge a few hours at the J1772 charger at a hotel in Tuba City.

It is like 225 miles from Bluff, UT to Flagstaff, and there is elevation gain as you pass I-40 to climb the hill to make it into 'Flag. A Taycan is not making that distance unless you stop in Tuba City and leverage the J1772 charger for a couple of hours.

I have driven from Telluride to Flagstaff in my Rivian via Monument Valley and have used the 50kW charger in Bluff, UT before without any issues.

I have driven a lot of miles throughout Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and UT in my CT4S. I would not attempt that drive south on UT 191 from Moab with my wife, unless she is a VERY patient woman.

ABRP says you should go from Bluff to Gallup and then on to Flagstaff so you can use the EA charger in Gallup. I don’t know anything about that area but I know that ABRP is great for planning a trip. It’s a very long trip at 16 hours and 48 minutes.

Thanks! Yeah I saw that one, but the next leg of the journey would be right about 200 miles; cutting it close! So the Porsche App is steering me back east into New Mexico where I would charge in Gallup, After charging in Monticello.

The drive south from Bluff, UT through Monument Valley is one of the most amazing drives in the entire planet. I have done it a bunch when I drove Range Rovers, but took a 5 year hiatus on that drive because I was all electric and none of the cars I had could make that distance. Then, I got the Rivian, so that changed!! I did that drive last summer and it was so worth it.

The '25 Taycan with its bigger battery and better efficiency should make the 225 miles between Bluff and Flagstaff.

Yeah, I had the same thought! Surprised my Taycan didn’t hold more value; but trips like this might do the trick to convince me. Nice pic!

It is all about timing.

A new Taycan and its larger battery can bridge the gap between Bluff, UT and Flagstaff if you keep the speed under control, but a gen 1 Taycan will certainly not make that distance.

There is a Tesla supercharger in Kayenta, AZ that a Taycan will be able to leverage once the Tesla supercharger network is opened up to Porsche. That will allow a gen 1 Taycan to bridge that 225 gap between the fast chargers in Bluff, UT and Flagstaff once charging access is enabled. But, it will probably not be enabled in time for your trip.

If you want to make the drive from 'Flag to Denver in May you will have to do I-40 to I-25 if you want to do the drive in one day, which I have done many times.

If Moab a requirement, then you will have to go through Durango and it will add serious time to the drive. But, you are driving in some of the most picturesque parts of the US, so stretching the drive out to a couple of days might be worth it.

I did the Durango trip last time on a Model X and it was spectacular. I did the Bluff south in a model 3 and ended up driving 40 MPH to make it to the charger. That sucked with all the pickups passing me at 85mph.

I have been driving Taycans since April, 2020. While I love my '22 CT4S, I am seriously leaning towards moving to the new Escalade IQ. It does not look half bad for a land yacht, it has a huge battery, huge range, and charges incredibly fast. It will easily do 350 miles at full highway speeds with climate blasting.


Anyway, keep an eye out for Tesla supercharging being enabled on Porsches. then you can make the drive from 'Flag to Moab via Monument Valley pretty easily.
