Was looking for an old poll by F1eng, which asked for opinions on an EV that simulates an ICE experience. (Search suck here, so my apologies to those I rebuke for not searching.)

Well, that EV is here. He says the “gearbox might be controversial“; do you mean, like, “turbo EV” controversial, or merely amusing..?

I like that there's an 8 speed setting.
All reviewers liked it, but Jason said the ICE emulation sounded slightly inaccurate to an enthusiast ear.
I'd have to hear it myself.

The noise is pants. Like putting steam engines sounds on a diesel loco.

However the car is great, and I'd get one for a play, but the Gameboy programmable key exploit which has seen regular 5's disappear off London streets, would see one of these bad boys gone at my gaff in under an evening.

(he says as another scrote tried to break in to my Turbo this morning just after 7am)

If you're going to simulate an ICE sound, why on earth would you pick a wheezy 4-cylinder econobox engine to emulate?

It sounds less realistic than any video game, but I think it's a brilliant idea.

I'm talking to a large Japanese OEM that is working on doing sporty EVs that use more synthetic sounds like this

Maybe they are aiming for the phenomenon ‘the suspension of disbelief’. If you try to make it sound ‘real’ your brain will reject it as clearly ‘not real’, but if it’s intentionally a fictitious sound, then you are far more likely to accept it.

As said above, I don't get any of this - if your desperate for some vroom, vroom noise just buy something with a real petrol or diesel reciprocating or rotary in it?!

Perplexing this fascination. with fakery

HmG is all about fun and the experience. They're absolutely loose cannons in today's stodgy world of limiting liabilities. I really appreciate that about them. While I am not enticed by the N, most people who have driven them really like them, in their entirety.

Interesting that this Ionic 5 N produces more power than most Taycans (641hp with their push-to-pass equivalent, 601hp always), and can regen brake via its blended braking system at a higher rate than any Taycan (320KW).

I will admit this car intrigues me and may replace the Taycan one day. Would need to personally drive it first.

I will just re-post what I posted in another forum:

While I was getting my ICCU SC302 update done, I walked next door to the Hyundai dealer. HI5N on display!

Interior: It's not low class, it's just a different style. I like the EV6 GT's, but the HI5N is equally nice, and the vented seats are identical, just vented. Nice!

Exterior: It really isn't that "loud" in person. I can dig it. However, the very flat front is going to take some serious rock damage because the impacts are literally vertical. WRAP YOUR FRONT if you buy one of these!!! And you're still going to get messed up.

Functional: The rear hatch area is what it is. Interior space is pretty similar. The roof is notably higher due to lack of a sunroof. I like that! The ground clearance is less than the EV6 GT for sure, about half an inch. I am not sure what HmG uses as the measure point, but about 1/2" is the difference in battery pack to ground. For the HI5N, it's about 6.1-6.2", for the EV6 GT, I measured about 6.6-6.7". The lowest point I could find on the underside of the HI5N was about 5.8", it was the cladding over the center of the rear motor/diff. The EV6 GT has about 6.2-6.4" here. In short, the HI5N is half an inch lower to the ground in every meaningful way, so keep that in mind.

Features: It has Wireless AA/ACP, which is cool. The vented seats are awesome. The rest of the stuff, I am glad I don't have to contend with. I want the car to sort itself regarding torque split, etc. I want to literally just press the button and GO! No procedures. No setup. Nothing. The GT does this. HI5N, not so much. It's information overload, where you have to literally select road surface traction levels for optimal launch...the GT just does all this magic in the background for you, and that's the way I like it. For a particular track, I think the HI5N certainly has merit, but as a GT car, it sucks and is very "busy". The one thing that is cool are the temp readouts for each motor and the battery, and the manual precondition selection. That would be simply a software update for existing cars, though.

All things said and done, I left not being jealous of the thing, and if I were to have my EV6 GT magic'ed away today, and had to buy another car, I'd just hold out for the 2025 EV6 GT facelift and get all the tech of the HI5N without futzing with the nonsense it has.
