Thanks I did see that but not a particularly good one of the complete installation.
This picture seems to show the other bank feeding into the Y pipe depicted in the detailed image above. I guess the embedding of an electric motor/generator into the turbo does eliminate a lot of concerns of the "traditional"/classic design.

(As an aside, the 959's turbos served both banks as well.)

Am I the only one that was kind of hoping it would be a plug in hybrid to at least get like 20-30 miles of pure EV?

The 959 was early and so much lag it was not nice to drive, even with two - it was a forerunner of work on reducing the negative side of turbo engines though. Turbos have come a fair way since then but only the ones with a motor/generator make them acceptable IMO and this is the first I'm aware of outside racing.

In this picture the exhaust volumes are very different for each bank, the ducting for the inlet, including intercooler will be interesting.

Another of the limitations of turbo engines is without an intercooler they are inefficient and with they have a large gas volume between compressor and inlet valves and whilst this doesn't matter for flat out use it makes it IMO, and IME, poor for road car use even if good for statistics. It takes longer for boost to build up because of this volume.

I have driven a lot of turbo cars over the years and none have been acceptable for everyday road use by me, even though some have been amazing flat out! On busy roads with short straights the most important engine characteristic for my use is instant throttle response for overtaking. Taycan is better by a huge amount than any turbo I have driven for this.

My only experience designing turbo cars and minimising lag and improving drivability has been for racing though.

I was surprised with how much turbo lag there was on the recent DB12. I could not come out of a Taycan Turbo S and get used to that for all the reasons @f1eng mention above.

Exhibit A:

I've set the video to start playing at the relevant bit.

I'm a little sad the engine start was replaced with a button. 0.1 kg of savings I guess.

"drive round it" and "keep it lit" are the key comments.
I have never wanted to drive round it and keeping it lit means driving around in a low gear all the time "just in case" which is naff.

And making a load of "look at me" noise when in an urban environment, not to mention trying to pull onto a busy roundabout.

Seeing how Ferrari did a pretty good job with 296 allowing 15 miles of electric range I was also expecting similar figures from Porsche. I don't see this hybrid engine as a big improvement over the previous one, ok its a bit faster and more responsive but way more expensive.

So annoying to see that, good that Porsche has push-to-pass button to remove lag, really helpful when you need instant response.

This car release just makes me more impatient to see what they achieve with the upcoming 718 EV.

How does that work?
Lag is due to the time it takes for boost to build up in the inlet tract, nothing other than spinning up the turbo quicker, like this one uniquely does, that I have ever heard of can do this if you are already at full throttle.

I am still waiting to see.
Whilst I am absolutely sold on the Taycan IMO a 2 seater should be light and handle well and I am prepared to put up with a gearbox and IC engine (as long as it is normally aspirated) to achieve it.

The noise can be nice and I personally rarely drive mine long enough for the noise to get tiring and annoying any more (I learned that on the way up to Scotland in my 355...)

I wait with baited breath to see how they have managed to get the weight sports car-esque.

Yes, and the "chest" shaped battery will be interesting too. Will this be the first EV that doesn't have the battery in the floor? Will this be the first BEV that doesn't automatically have a low centre of gravity?
