is there a way to check the capacity of the battery?

And it's current state of health?

need to know if it car has all working cells or is damaged.

also need to know if car sees battery as perf+ or regular - unclear if a software update is only seeing or reporting battery as the smaller one

prefer something I can use at home to check without taking to service center

Dealer facility only unless you have access to specific tooling.

Check your VIN for the car spec and / or My Porsche if officially registered your build will be there along with battery type.

Base Taycan has the Performance Battery only and so the + is standard on all Taycans apart from Taycan RWD and 4S.

Search this site ……. Many many posts on battery SoH, that will show you cell health, takes 5 minutes ……..You need an OBD2 scanner … VGate works well with car scanner app……

Get an OBD2 scanner as recommended above. Take your SOH and cell voltages at 85% charge or thereabouts. Take your car down to 5-10% charge and record the cell voltages using the OBD2. Let it sit overnight for balancing and check the new voltages and SOH. Charge back up using your home charger to 100% and recheck the voltages and SOH. I would expect you to see an improvement in both the variation of voltages after the overnight sit, and an improvement of the SOH after charging to 100%.

If you have a bad cell, it should trigger an error at very low charge. If so, take a picture of your dash and the error. If not, you're probably fine.

Is the battery error that might be triggered by Taycan being at very low charge overnight one of those that essentially makes the car undrivable - such as "Electrical System Error - Park vehicle in safe place"?

Not necessarily. I got this error and it went away later in the day. The dealer could not reproduce the error, so very glad I took a pic of the dash with the message. When I had two modules replaced, the Battery Technician told me that the module was probably bad from the beginning, but the error code didn't show until they drained the battery to 5-10%.
