Buying a Used Taycan for sub £50k

Hi All,

I recently hired an 82 kwh Polestar 2 (£99 for 3 days from Hertz Oxford, if your interested) and was very impressed that the 340 range was very accurate (cross country). However for similar sub £50k cost of the Polestars puts me into a good choice of Perf Plus's. I intend to buy (deposit+loan) or PCP but interested to know others experience of buying used Taycans? Though ready to buy now I plan to wait till Sept when hope to see more choice after new regs. Ideally I'd like a Cross-T but not sure the uplift is worth it? TiA

Whilst I've taken the risk on all other cars, I wouldn't buy one without a full Porsche warranty.

So if buying from a non-franchised dealer, I would want the dealer paying for a full Porsche check as a prelude to putting a warranty on the car, and any work precluding a warranty going on being fully covered. (I don't believe Porsche will let a non-franchised dealer get a warranty for the car).

If it has a warranty and has been properly serviced, then extending the warranty is c.£1k per year.

Known niggles and problems are well documented on here.

Other than that, think carefully about what spec you want. Everything was an option, so cars often vary a good bit.

Oh, and no way on Earth are you getting 340 miles out of one. Think 200-240 in favourable conditions. 170-210 in winter.

Just extended my warranty and Connected Drive for its 4th year.

Warranty was £1366 and about £270 for additional year Connected Drive iirc.

Performance Plus. Though I have a GTS and the wheels/tyres aren't the tidiest for range.

You may get up to 250 miles in nice summer conditions, but I wouldn't bank on it (there are people on here who swear they get 300 mile ).

tbh though, I wouldn't worry about it. I've never really had an issue with public charging, which if you use the satnav to ensure the car is prep'd is quick.

Bike? Never tried. Probably, I would think. Though if you get one with rear bike carrier prep you could get a bike carrier

Mine included Roadside Assistance - that's probably the difference.

I reckon I will be moving on within the next 12 months personally.
Taycan reliability is now becoming far too much of an issue for me.

One other thing to add on any used purchase - make sure you have the underside battery protection cover fully inspected.

Ideally be there in person and get a video of it.

Combination for me Murph......
Its been in the dealers more than all the other cars I've had in 40+ years driving combined.

Recalls and warranty work. Another recall letter yesterday (brakes). Current battery fault too - won't charge on RH Port. It was in last month for yellow battery warning. Also not happy with the common inner tyre wear problem going forward.

So I don't trust it any more for any long journeys. Which just makes it a bit too much of a liability unfortunately.

Note the Porsche approved used 111 point check does not include battery degradation. Nor do any routine servicing checks or 3 year end of manufacturer warranty checks.
When buying used check the range is as expected. Ask the dealer to share a battery state of health report. Walk if they’re reluctant or refuse. Check battery degradation vs. Warranty terms.
Be careful with age. The manufacturers battery warranty expires after 8 years. It is unclear if any warranty extension will be available. Reliability issues mean that any follow on battery warranty is likely to be expensive. Taycan depreciation is a significant factor. That will continue towards year 8 as the remaining battery warranty runs down. The motor industry appears unprepared for aged EV support. Currently the only post warranty fix option appears expensive Porsche franchise labour rates and parts prices. That could mean you’re left with salvage value!
Buying sub £50k probably means buying a 4 year old car. Unless you like a gamble, have deep pockets and can tolerate unreliability I’d suggest buying a new Tesla Model 3 for that price instead! Taycan’s look and drive great but are like having a gorgeous nymphomaniac deranged alcoholic girlfriend who is also having an affair with the service manager at your local dealer!

A PCP would give a guaranteed future value but that won’t be high and so your interest costs and repayments will be relatively high.

Financially a Panamera may be a better deal. I veered from buying one of those to buying a Taycan instead. I now think I made the wrong choice.

In summary, I would suggest....

1. Get an insurance quote first.
2. Make sure the battery protective tray is undamaged.
3. Then get a full battery check.
4. Check with dealer for full history of work on the car and recalls due / carried out.
5. Agree a return option if you are not happy in writing.
6. Proceed with normal due diligence.

The best!

But you need to go in eyes wide open.

The real problem for me isn't just the issues (look at recent threads on here), it's the woeful lack of Taycan trained techs available to work on the car when it does go wrong. Thats the real problem.

I phoned on Friday, and it's over 3 months wait if I need a loaner while mine is in.
Other option is phone Porsche Assist (AA/Enterprise) and risk driving a clapped out Merc for the duration of repair work.

That is what is completely unacceptable to me.
You should be in a Taycan if its being fixed.
