I'm planning to pull the trigger on a certified Taycan in the next couple weeks. I've spent a bunch of time reading up and still have a few questions. I've decided that I want a 4S, Turbo, or Turbo S. The must have options are rear axle steering (RAS), adaptive cruise control (ACC), and active lane keep (ALK). PDCC would be nice to have but not required. I'm going with Chalk or Ice Grey for the exterior.

  1. Range Difference? This will be a daily driver in MN and I have charging available at home and at work, so the 200 mile range is sufficient. However, when I looked at the window sticker for a 2021 and 2020 Turbo S ; the 2020 stated 192 miles and the 2021 stated 201. It had the same wheels. Why is there 9 miles difference?

  2. Issues with 2020 and 2021 resolved? I've heard that the 2020 and 2021 model years had the most problems. It is my understanding that those problems have been addressed through various recalls and updates which is why 2022 and later has less issues. If I buy a 2020, as long as it is certified and has the recalls/updates completed, wouldn't the reliability be similar to a 2022 or newer?
  3. BlackBerry Color: I found a 2022 Turbo S that is very well loaded with everything I want. The only downside is that it has the BlackBerry interior. While I don't love it, it's a compromise I'm willing to make. The only issue, I won't be able to see the interior before buying it. As long as it's a subdued purple, I think I'll be fine with it. Thoughts?
  4. Ride Comfort and Suspension: How is the ride quality of the Turbo S compared to Turbo or 4S? I don't want the harsher ride of the GTS. If I understand, the 4S would be most supple, then the Turbo or Turbo S?
  5. FOD Store for ALK: Will I have and issues with activating ALK on the FOD store for any of these? They all have ACC so I believe it should work.
  6. Top 3 choices: Here are the three that are at the top of my list:
    • The 2020 is cheapest and has PDCC. It's white, so my third choice for color.
    • The 2022 has a lot of options but it has the blackberry (purple) interior so I don't know if I'll like it.
    • What do you suggest???

With MN winters, I expect to lose 20% range so the 192 miles of the Turbo S isn't great. For those with the Turbo S, what do you actually get?

Also, the stated ranges don't make sense to me. I pulled these from the ones I was looking at. I'm guessing they must change it based on wheel size?

Lastly, for regular driving around, why would the Turbo S have less range than the Turbo?

Range:
2020 Turbo S is 192 miles.
2021 and 2022 4s and Turbo S is 201 miles.
2024 4s is 206 miles.
2023 4S is 235 miles.
2023 Turbo is 238 miles.

Porsche Approved Used adverts quote the range when new, with no battery degradation caveat. That seems to apply in all territories. VW/Audi UK give a degradation caveat. By default VW/Audi UK provide a Battery Health certificate. Porsche GB doesn’t. I wrote to the Porsche GB CEO suggesting they should change this (and also test battery health at warranty milestones) but they decided not to. Some enterprising legal firm may one day start a misselling class action.
Quoted ranges are reduced by battery health (typically 10% after 3/4 years); temperature and driving speed. With temperature and degradation expect a real range of c.30% less than the advertised one. Wheel size and if the design isn’t aero can be another 10%. 4WD also reduces range.
If range is your priority, a RWD on aero design 20s is the best option. Less bragging rights but same driving experience most of the time (but quieter) and your money will buy a newer one, cheaper to insure. But you probably won’t find one with the other options you want. Life’s like that.
Much like penis enlargement, buying a more capable Porsche doesn’t extend your driving capabilities. For most people base is best.

I’ve not found the Turbo or Turbo S default suspension settings noticeably harsher than my 4S. I’d describe them as more taut, which better suits the default more responsive steering and acceleration, but not overly firm. Your local road surface quality is a bigger comfort factor.
Playing with the suspension settings is a day one novelty thing. After that I always stick to defaults. Your passengers will thank you for it. Your dog will thank you by not throwing up. And there’s less risk of battery damage.

Hi,

I purchased the 2020 4S with extended battery pack which on full charge comes up as 272 miles and 225 miles at 85% charge. These figures were reduced down to 230 and 207 miles during cold weather (around -5 overnight) but are accurate and remain consistent when driving. All recalls have been carried out and car came with 2 year Porsche Warranty and I have driven over 2000 miles since collection and enjoyed every minute, so far!

Whatever model you choose you will be blown away by the performance and all round comfort offered by the Taycan and as someone else stated, once the novelty wears off you will simply get in the car, leave all settings as default and just enjoy the drive.

I think the sweet spot on the used market is the turbo. Especially if you are wanting max range. Turbo S is fantastic and the launch is very addicting however it does get less miles then the turbo. I think this is due to the different inverter but not sure. Turbo and 4S with larger pack are pretty much identical on range. There was a prior turbo owner on this board that got an S and regretted it due to the range reduction. Personally I don’t need the extra range so if I would do it today for my needs I would go Turbo S.

The 2020 and 2021 cars have had all the original bugs worked out of them at this point. All taycans of all years have problems now. So make sure you get a cpo.

If you don’t like the interior don’t get the car. I wouldn’t settle on any of those cars if it’s not what you are wanting. Just take your time and find the one that fits best for you. There are more coming to market everyday.

Let me provide some inputs as a 2023 Turbo owner.

1. Please do not drive yourself crazy on the Range, as you are splitting hairs and it does not matter if you drive locally and have access to charging on both ends. The reason why, is that the recommended use for local driving is to keep the car close to 50% SoC and charge as often as needed. If you are looking at Turbo/TurboS it is all the same with no statistical difference. Low temps will impact range significantly, so at 32F you are having a 200 mile range car at 100% but you do not want to be very low or very high, so usable range is more like 160 miles, but it does not matter if your one way trip is less than that and you can charge on arrival.

Taycan Turbo is similar to Turbo S and Porsche tested in real world mixed driving in California to get around 240 miles, as a data point for you. I can get 270 miles in local driving when it is not winter, and 200 miles when going at 80mph speeds on a highway between 40F and 50F as another data point.

2. I would stay away from 2020 as battery is a different chemistry, it does not have plug and charge, and then a lot of components are bound to break as they are original launch edition. So, to me, I would focus on sorting out the differences between 2021 and 2022.

3. This is a tough one, Blackberry, without having to look at it in person. I know it is not bright, but it is everywhere. I see it has some nice options like NVA and PASS screen (little use) and such, but somehow the 3rd option looks best to me, since the interior is more thoughtfully configured with Black leather with Interior accents in Exterior color, that I have myself, and love!

4. I have driven them all and I do not see any difference between a 4S and a Turbo in comfort ride quality with both having Air Suspension with wheels and tires matter more than the trim type. I would not be hanging on PDCC, I have it but is does such little adjustment that it will not be noticeable in any normal driving, may be when you hard cornering on the track it makes a difference, but otherwise it is just added weight and complexity. What is going for Turbo S is the PCCB brake setup as it is less in un-sprung weight resulting in better handling. None appear to have RAS, so if anything that would be a nice to have, but again you cannot have it all.

5. You are in luck as FOD still available for these models, but no one knows for how long, as it has been officially phased out. You do want to FOD ALK, priced separately from InnoDrive but little use. Although, when optioning new they are together as InnoDrive including ALK.

6. I vote #3 TTS 2021 with low miles and I see no major compromises vs. others. Make sure it is a CPO and all recalls are done!

Another model year 2020 Taycan owner here . . . Porsche replaced my entire high voltage battery pack less than a year ago, so the age of the car doesn't necessarily equate to the state of the battery pack.
