I never went back to ICE (and won't), BUT you really need to take these studies with a grain of salt. There was another study 2 years ago that said 50% don't go back to electric. Data is easily manipulated. Working with a ton of dealerships, I can tell you first hand that it's more than 1% who trade-in EVs for an ICE.

We have 2 EV (Macan and Taycan) and I also have 3 911s in the garage.

For daily? EV all the way. But what I don't like is feeling like I'm in a beta test experiment constantly.

EV is not yet a mainstream product (for multiple reasons), and I live somewhere (CA) where EVs are everywhere.

I would never do a hybrid, worst of both worlds and additional complication to break

Hard to go back to gas in a daily. The cost of ownership on these EVs is punishing though (depreciation) and that is coming from someone who is very used to 5 figure repair bills on his 911s.

After buying an EV, less than 1% of drivers go back to gas-powered cars

https://electrek.co/2024/12/10/afte...you go electric, you, return to an ICE vehicle

I've resisted looking at this survey for the last week, but finally went and read the report of the survey results. First off, almost no survey has a 99% results one way. If you ask people whether the moon landing was faked, about 10% say yes. It's not uncommon for there to be 4% or more user error in typing in an answer. As a result, a "less than 1%" result practically shouts there is a methodology problem.

The obvious initial problem is what we call selection bias. The survey was conducted by an "alliance of EV drivers." What do you think an "alliance" favors? Probably positive answers on this survey.

Asked what the biggest problem with driving an EV is, the majority of respondents say "there isn't any problem." Hmm. 57% say that finding chargers that do not work happens only "rarely" or "never." I wish that was true.

What I take away from this survey is the following: Among people that really like this kind of car, 99% of them say they like this kind of car.

That being said, I do think the majority of BEV owners intend to buy another BEV. Is it 99% of them? No. We don't even have 99% satisfaction on this Taycan forum!

I replaced my Panamera with the Taycan. The gentlemen that bought it asked me to send him what I’ve done to the car in terms of maintenance so I opened the sheet I keep for tracking and…geez - nothing major but: plugs, coils, ofc oil and filters, some coolant tubing that left me stranded and had to call road service, 3 radiators (stone damage) - main, transmission and some other small one, engine dampeners, pdk filter plus the whole tray thing and oil, diff oil, two 12 batteries, new disks and 5 pads changes. That’s for about 70k km. I am not counting suspension parts since the Taycan has them too. None of it is particularly expensive but it’s a visit to the shop plus up to a week without the car which is an issue for me because it’s was daily. It was a great car, I loved it and had many great trips with my family in it.

However, the family loves the Taycan much more, it’s quieter, drives better and if I don’t get any of the serious problems with it, I see myself buying the next gen one in few years.

I don’t think if given the choice I would get back to ICE as main car. However, I would buy an old 911 or some of my other childhood dream cars that make wroom wroom :)

I've been driving EV's for well over a decade. My wife and I had 2 Model S'es each. After those, we were both liking the EVs and never wanted to go back to ICE. I got a Taycan, my wife got Audi Q8 etron. After a less than 2 years, my wife has been thinking about going back to ICE. It didn't help that last night my Taycan decided to go on hunger strike (refuses to charge from AC or DC), presumably because it wants to spend the holidays amongst other Porsches at the dealer. As I was borrowing her car to run some errands because my Taycan had just enough range to make it to the dealer, my wife reminded me how she's been thinking of going to back to ICE. So it seems Teslas made her want more EV's, other manufacturer are making her want to go back to ICE (perhaps on purpose? VWAG prefers to sell ICE?). I suspect the trend is more along the lines of the new car tech companies making EVs exclusively from a blank slate design attract people to EVs, while the traditional auto companies make crappy ICE to EV adaptations, causing most of the people who want to go back. It's like a Ford Model T vs. horse buggies with a motor bolted on. Too bad the study didn't collect that detail - what EV do you have today.

Meh...… Yes most people in a 'normal' EV wouldn't go back.

I'd suggest the Taycan is a bit more of a petrol heads car and therefore I imagine a poll of taycan turbo s owners would offer a different answer.

Would I go back to a petrol - Yes of course - just need to get a 992 911 GT3 to add up in my man maths.

Who are the 1% and how do they finance their vehicles - filter out the company cars, cars on salary sacrifice and see how that number changes.

If I wasn't funding my Taycan I would 100% keep going with an EV - a fantastic experience made better by a home charging ecosystem.

If it wasn't for the shocking Taycan depreciation and heavy discounting of stock cars I may choose to abandon ship and switch to a 911 at some stage next year. Why not inflate 2nd hand values and stop fiddling with list prices (or indeed reduce the prices from the get go)?

The EV market in UK is completely 'false' in the sense that it is chaotic due primarily to government policy, lack of cohesion and a decision to penalise manufacturers as some idiotic goal towards "net zero" (which is a nice idea but largely pointless if neither US, China, Russia, India etc take it seriously). £15K / car manufacturer penalty in 2024 and £25k in 2025 if quotas aren't reached - a self-made firesale right there!

If I lived in Norway where everything is generally well thought through and planned then I'd be happy (financially) staying with an EV. This 'stability' won't come to the UK / EU market for some years yet I fear and so personally financed EVs are a fool's folly if wishing to flip every two - three years.

Ask me tomorrow and I'll probably be saying something different and along the lines of "I'll just keep what I have for longer"!

I plan to have at least one light-weight, manual car in my life for many years to come. There is nothing like the sound, feel, and involvement of a great manual ICE car. That means probably buying used cars if my current manual car somehow dies

For a daily car I would be hard pressed to go back to any ice car. Only one that would tempt me has a supercharged manual V8. Just too many positives on the electric side from point a to b. I will still keep all my other fun ice cars though. Even for a cheap daily a used model 3 P or Plaid just is way too hard to ignore. With that said I’m out on any new Porsche cars Ice or electric. To me they have priced themselves out of desirability for me.

Almost all my driving is urban and suburban with home charging, so electric is perfect. If I did a lot of long distance driving, given our winters and poor charging infrastructure, I probably wouldn't. Whether the next electric is a Porsche remains to be seen depending on what the alternatives look like.

Well, that’s not good. So sorry to hear your Taycan is acting up. Be sure to follow up and let us know what the charging problem was.

i’m not surprised by your wife’s comment. At some point, the lack of a robust and widespread charging infrastructure just gets people down. Not an issue for me personally, but I totally get it.

“Go back”? For me it is not ICE or EV, it is the car I love and want to spend money on. Taycan was the most appealing 3 years ago, it being an EV was not part of the decision. I needed an stationwagon and price wise I could get an Audi Rs4 avant or Taycan ST.

I hate to admit it but my wife's (dual motor) EV6 is faster than my Porsche...I ain't gonna tell her!
We have a 2025 Taycan Turbo so the EV6 is a fair bit slower. That said, it is crazy how quick the mid-level EV6 is. We got it for about $30K after tax credits and discounts. A lot of car for the money although it is in a different league than the Taycan.
