The 12 V battery in my 2021 Taycan RWD is 3 1/2 years old now. How long can they last and when is it a good time to replace?

The dealer can do a measurement of capacity. I have not heard of anyone run out of 12V capacity on the Taycan as these are Li-Ion if I am not mistaken, but so far I have a Li-Ion 12V in a 5 year old Cayenne and it has not been called for replacement due to low capacity. However, a regular 12V in our 2016 Macan had to be replaced after 8 years since its capacity dropped to 50% at which time the replacement was recommended, but I know a lot of owners just drive until they cannot start the car anymore.

I monitor my 12V voltage in the Taycan to be sure it stays within normal operating range, but Taycan is known to run it dead when not driven for long periods of time, but I believe a software update should have fixed the logic how often the 12V is charged from the main battery to prevent this. At least, no recent reports of say leaving the car for 2 weeks unplugged and coming to a dead 12V if it was left at recommended 50% SoC.

Thank you for this important information
When is your next scheduled service? We can help you make sure you are not going to be taken advantage of. For example, do not get suckered into another 2-year Brake Fluid flush as this brake hose recall does that for free. When was your cabin filter changed, etc.? Do they replace your fob battery for $15 without asking you?

I recently purchased this car used so I don't know about the cabin filter, but I doubt it is dirty because the car is almost like new with 17,000 miles on it. I will be sure to let them know that the key fobs have new batteries and that I expect to have the brake fluid changed. Thank you so much for your advocacy.

You may want to be seated when the dealer gives you the replacement cost of the 12V. I don't think you'l really need it. They don't have the same degradation as VRLA lead acid 12V batteries.

Mine's a MY23 - when was this software update?

My 12V died a few weeks ago after a period of having the car stood. I had to jump it back into life after using a motorcycle battery to get the bonnet/hood opened. I still believe the car (made in late November 2022) has the original 8 x re-charge cycles on the 12V when parked up and then the gig is up, algorithm. That's irrespective of the charge level on the main/800V traction battery

The filter gets dirty and collects mold, so if you go by the evidence of the link below then I recommend replacement every 10k miles or 1 year at a minimum. This is mine after 9k miles, but you can scroll up and see what a filter looks like at 19k/2years and hope that will make a strong point not to wait for Porsche recommended 20k miles and 2 year interval to replace something that you can do yourself in 15 min time with a part that sells for $30 for 2.

I always look at any part that the dealer removes before putting a new one in. This one is an easy DYI vs. letting the dealer rip you off for parts and labor at $300 a pop.

Cayenne 12V Li-Ion was quoted at almost $5K, so yes you want to be seated for that.
Macan ICE 12V was quoted at $2K but I was able to negotiate it down to $1K.

We have no instance of Taycan's 12V being replaced as of yet, but I expect it to be over $5K due to much higher labor rates set by dealers for Taycans.

Both literally insane costs. Ask Tesla how much their LiFePo accessory battery costs, since they switched from lead.

The battery for the Taycan is made by A123 Systems in the Czech Republic. Some of us us got in touch with them when we had the 12V battery shortage crisis a few years ago which was holding cars up in docksides and warehouses around the world while Porsche sorted it. Sadly they didn't want to sell us any "spare" batteries then either...?

Open the hood / bonnet. It’s right there between the frunk compartment and the scuttle. Remove one bit of plastic (no tools) to get access to the battery terminals. Remove a second bit of plastic to expose the battery area completely. It's mounted off centre towards the passenger side of the vehicle.

I left my car for a few months in my garage plugged into the charger and when I came back, the 12volt was dead. Couldnt open the doors or the frunk. The tow truck guy found A Spot under the dash for a temporary charge to drive it out of the garage.
