Hi everyone! Firstly, thank you SO much to the community for the amazing content that is on here. As a new Taycan owner, if have found the reading/help in these forums second to none.

So after reading all of the issues with the Porsche Connect Mobile Charger, even though I just came back from my Porsche dealership with having the recall addressed, I thought I would play it safe and just get a third party charger for the home. I settled on a Tesla universal wall charger and am happy with my decision. The question now is that should I just manage the charging schedules, monitoring, etc thru the My Porsche app or the Tesla app? To be honest, I have not even charged my car as yet so don't know what information each of the apps show. I know that we should be keeping the charge between 25-85%, so still trying to figure out how to set up all that.

For those of you who use your Taycan with the Tesla charger, what's your norm routine to watch things.

Thanks!!

You can set limit in the car for max charge at 80-85%. Other than that, not much to manage.

Your tesla charger / tesla app might offer the option to charge when the electricity tariffs are low, so maybe have a look into that.

Sounds good, thanks! Outside of that, is there anything helpful on the Tesla app that folks use regularly?

use Porsche’s app and/or in-car software to manage charging.

there is very little you need the Tesla app for with a universal charger once it is installed and configured.

the best way to use a home EV charger is let the car and it's software do all the work - and treat the EV charger (EVSE) as just a "dumb" power supply - which is essentially what it is…it's just the power source, let the car and it's software manage the charging…

when ever I've tried to use EVSE scheduleing or other fancy features, the car and the EVSE end up arguing with each other and then you wake up ready to go to work only to find out it didn't charge overnight since the two parties couldn't decide who was in charge while I slept…

you can monitor the EVSE with the Tesla app and see when it providing power, and "watch" - you can also download stats and see how much power it provided for each charging session with the Tesla app - that's super exciting for about the first 2-6 weeks, and then you won't care any more and can easily/safely ignore - I would make sure the Tesla app is setup, functional, and shows you when it works vs. idle, but other than that it's just a status thing "hey is this on?" - it should "just work" which means you should never really need to do anything with it.

get home, plug the car in, walk away - that is EV ownership happiness…IMHO.

Love that response!! Makes total sense and that’s essentially what I will do. It was exactly what I was asking for and thanks for providing the perfect response!

You are in luck as minimum is 25% as soon as you plug the car in. Then you need to decide when you prefer for the car to achieve 85%, if it does not matter the car will keep going if you set the Profile as Optimized to 85%, but if you want it by a morning departure time and preheated/precooled then you set a Timer.

I basically edited the General Profile to set a minimum of 85% and did not put on a timer. This way, anytime I plug it in with a Level 2 charger at home or a DC fast charger at Electrify America, it will max me out at 85%.
When I need a 100% charge for road trip, will just hit Direct Charge to bypass the profile.
Thankfully I have a heated garage and don’t need to pre-heat/cool the car.

Charging controls only work for AC charging such as Profiles, Timers, and Direct Charge.
None apply to DC charging such as Electrify America (EA). You also, need to remember, if you have free EA charging this only applies to the first 30 min so anything over will be a cost.

Ok thanks, good to know! Didn't realize that timers/profiles didn't apply to DC charging. Yes, I do keep an eye on the 30 min mark. But if just left, even if direct charge isn't selected, DC charging will just go all the way to 100%?

Yes, that is correct and then idle fees will most likely apply.

Regarding the 30 minute limit (for free) on EA changing, according to my dealer there is a 15 minute grace period, so they won’t ding your CC until you hit 45 minutes.

I cannot confirm that with personal experience, however 45 minutes on a L3 charger is a heck of a long time, normally beyond what you need to get a full charge.

Nope. I can confirm, having paid overage charges, that at the 30 min mark you start to get billed. So that’s why it’s important to try and find a 350 kW charger, so that you can maximize your charge for those 30 mins!

EA typically charges by the kWh not "minutes" - regardless of 150 kW vs. 350 kw station a normal EA session at the 30 min mark the Macan/Taycan is well into the 80% SOC (even low 90%) - that means by this time the charge rate is so slow that there isn't much left to charge you for…

even if you're only at 80% SOC - and you stay plugged into 100% (another hour past 30 minutes BTW) - that's only 20% of 95 kWh - or about 19 kWh - 19 kWh @ 0.43/Kwh is about $8.17 worth of power that you'll be charged if EA is billing by the kWh…which they typically are.

I also wouldn't sweat the 150 kW vs. 350 kW - the real time difference is not as big as most people imagine given the charging taper curve - I've done the math in other threads.

like all sales people regarding most issues, and in particular EV issues - this is incorrect and mostly clueless - EA promptly charges started at the 30:01 mark of a charging session…

their 350 kW stations do not work all that often, but their billing software is rigorously prompt.
