I bet the recent battery recall taught them what Tesla learned long ago. Manufacturer NEEDS car connectivity more than some drivers. Tesla originally offered free connectivity for 7 years, but never disconnected old users who got it. For new cars. basic connectivity (app, remote preheat, remote lock/unlock/drive, etc) is free. They did start charging for premium connectivity which adds streaming movies, games, satellite and real-time traffic view, remote access to cameras, etc. So all Teslas are connected all the time, the remote monitoring of batteries, wear, usage patterns, etc. is worth more to Tesla than the cost of cellular data subscription. For newer cars, it can also collect data for FSD training, though a lot of it is sent via WiFi, since Tesla has allowed WiFi since day one.

They haven't factored in tariffs in the prices yet yet. Shipping is also going to go up if the penalty fees are imposed on Chinese made ships. 98% of shipping runs on Chinese ships, including the roll-on/roll-off kind.

Tariffs on cars are supposed to be 25%, shipping cost increases due to Chinese ship penalties estimated to be $800-$1,800 per car, depending on shipping company.

If an owner doesn't renew Porsche Connect I don't see that means the car stops taking back to Porsche, just that the Connect services aren't available. It's a trivial amount of money for Porsche to pay for cell phone service.

I would speculate that being a customer of Connect Services means you agree to terms and conditions. If you are no longer a customer, this leaves Porsche without any kind of consent as to what they can do with that connection, which might ran afoul of regulatory requirements in various jurisdictions.

If you are no longer a customer, this leaves Porsche without any kind of consent as to what they can do with that connection, which might ran afoul of regulatory requirements in various jurisdictions.

Agreement is for the services you use.

Separate to that is the privacy statement and agreement and ability to switch on and off.

Sure, but who would click "I agree to give the car access to send information to the manufacturer in exchange for zero usable features", then click "I agree" again every times the terms and conditions change. If clicking "I disagree" makes useful functionality disappear, users will find the option to agree in order to get it back. If clicking "disagree" disconnects the car forever, there isn't even a way to offer something new to the user (no way to push any more notifications). Agreeing for connectivity for no functionality gain also just adds unnecessary power drain, and more things that could fail.

Even just being connected give at least the telco provider ability to track you. Without any Connect Services, Porsche has no reason to push this privacy violation on people. Imagine a manufacturer selling clothing which is tracked 24/7 without the users knowledge - I bet that would violate regulations if a few places.

It seems porsche is differtiating between markets for this freebies. With the CT Turbo the UK store shows RAS for free while the German and Belgium stores still lists it as an option ( ~2K).

Same for the performance battery plus with Taycan RWD / 4S, included in UK, but paid option in home market of Germany and in USA.

With the sharp depreciation in the UK maybe Porsche feels they need to make a new Taycan more attractive. Or atleast more so than in other markets.

It has always been the case. I remember looking in 2021, some options included in one market but not the other (e.g. heatpump or glass roof or PB+ or dashcam prep), some options costed significantly different amounts between UK and US. I think standard vs. optional features, as well as pricing, are very region dependent, and set to meet local regulations, customer preferences , as well as maximize profit. Even which trims are available varies from market to market (e.g. no ST in USA except for GTS trim, so no way to get base ST, or Turbo S ST, or 4S ST).

In the market in which i reside, CT 4S base equipment includes:
- Shades and Dreams colors (up to 1430$)
- 20in wheels (2380$)
- 14 way comfort seats (1500$)
- 4 zone AC (1030$)
- parking assist w/ surround view (1590$)
- comfort access & soft close doors (710$)
- Bose (1240$)

BUT the list price at today's FX is 158,550$, not 128,350$ (incl destination charge, excl sales tax) ...
Cars remain cheap in the US. At least pre-tariff.

There are nuances to this. Depending on the country, laws govern the use of the data based on whether the collector can/want to anonymize and can "salt" the data, and in consideration of why the data needs to be used. It's a complex rubrics that Porsche takes seriously (they have a global head of privacy), but it's misuse is not known unless you sue them.
