That’s a western world problem.

In China, you can order a new battery for pretty much any EV on the market with pretty much any chemistry.

So with time, and investment, things will get better in western world also. It’s just that things are moving much slower than they are in China.
Wow, that's nice. Until the western world have the same access of aftermarket battery, the anxiety of battery replacement cost will never go away.

There are already companies selling replacement batteries with higher capacity (and thus longer range than OEM) for the BMW i3. Also for the Renaul Zoe.

I don't see why this pattern wouldn't extend to incude the Taycan, also taking into account that for what is essentially the same hardware, owners would be willing to pay a Porsche tax. So vendors should expect higher margins for Porsche aftermarket replacements, despite of Porsche being somewhat "niche".

The Chinese are already selling aftermarket LED headlights for all generations of 911, Boxster/Cayman and Panamera. All these are pretty niche, yet companies jump on the opportunity.

I foresee the same happening for batteries. There's plenty of owners willing to pour cash on a quality replacement providing higher range, less weight and longer longevity. Someone will eventually seize that opportunity. It's just a matter of time.

Wages (still) at 300$/m continue to enable business cases that will never see the light of day in the western hemisphere. That and a business culture which, with these 3rd tier suppliers, is not exactly high on quality and safety. Chinese consumers have bifurcated expectations depending on whom they buy from.

30y ago, there used to be cottage industries that never saw the light of day in western Europe or the US. Same today, although it has evolved in nature, but for the same reasons.

I used to believe about more shops and cheaper battery when there are more EVs available.
I stopped believe this comment after owning EVs for 10+ years. Living in one of the most dense EV city in SoCal, there are only a few mom and pop shop that can handle EV battery. The cost is slightly cheaper than manufacture service center, it's not worth the risk for the price difference. There is no quality 3rd party battery brand available. The replacement battery market is just not here. At this point, it's more like a dream than coming soon.

Cost to replace battery is a real concern when shopping for a used EV.
You are right, seeing how the battery manufacturing industry evolves, my money is also on batteries which are unbreakable and last way way beyond the life of the car. But that also means, that manufacturer/insurances are not bothered by replacements anymore...

I see cars similarly to watches, the $5 Casio is by most measures the best at telling the time but people still love and buy $5k Rolex's and $50k Patek Philippe's.
Cannot compare!

Cars really age! Watches don't.

How do you drive a Porsche ICE from 2000 in 2050, when
1. all gas stations have long disappeard
2. all driving is done by AI and you are strictly forbidden to touch a steering wheel?

Yeah, in the long run.

I’m not talking about the Chinese market when stating that manufacturers do too little to convince the private buyers. In the EU/US, ICE dominated markets, private buyers are resilient to change

...

I’m a bit frustrated by what no-one is doing. Unlike Zeekr in China. There’s not a single Western car maker promoting such a thing like a lifetime battery warranty.
Comparing a Taycan LG 2019 battery to my Zeekr CATL 2023 battery shows how fast the development in battery tech goes.

I remember the same happend with the first laptops I bought. We are early adopters and have to pay at least part of the learning curve.

He'll be gone soon! Porsche in China is dead horse, no matter how much they beat it, it won't come back unless they are super innovative again.

Think about it, the Chinese are outsmarting the global competition on battery and software left and right. Porsche with the Taycan, which was very well received in China did not even offer InnoDrive and none of the other digital services. With the facelift, the Taycan in China felt totally outdated compared the the Chinese competition in every aspect. And the ride quality of Chinese cars is almost as good now! Honestly, I am shocked how to threw in the towel!
It needs a totally different mapping platform for China and I doubt they have the data access to do PID.

I’m rather hoping with small numbers sold and the pull back from EVs that my Taycan will become a collectable classic. 🤞😉

The curved screen is an interesting choice, but at least it doesn't look like an ipad slapped on the dash like most cars..

The center storage looked massive though. Way better use of space than the Taycan.

So Porsche has not made it a secret that it plans to bring the innovations in its soft release of the electric Cayenne across the entire electric platform. I suspect that the MY2027 Taycan will have:

Motors: Upgraded and oil-cooled rear motor producing more power, less heat, and eliminating the need for a two-speed transmission.

Single-size, larger 108kW (usable out of 113kW) LG pouch modular battery: no longer provides chassis support, offering access to individual pouches rather than requiring the entire pack to be dropped. Cooling will extend to the top of the pouches rather than just the bottom. This could change if Samsung's solid-state battery reaches production in time (Samsung has stated that Porsche is its target for introducing the 40% weight-reduced system bY 2027), although it aims to replace all of VW Group's electric vehicles with LG batteries.

Android Automotive OS: supported by five new SoC modules with the latest chips (hopefully upgradable hardware and OTA software like Teslas). This is Porsche and VW groups Achilles heel as the time necessary to upgrade components is extraordinarily long. There is a definite hardware software barrier. Every line of code should be accessible and upgradable OTA. Until that happens, Porsche and the rest of VW group will be not be competitive.

Wireless charging: using a pad ($8K option), where the car parks and aligns itself before lowering down for optimal charging.
ha
Flow main screen: with a 45-degree bend and haptic mechanical controls.

Augmented Reality head-up display.

There are additional interior innovations that German automotive influencers made reference to but could not comment about, pending the introduction next year.

Paddle shifters incorporating push-to-pass (attack mode) will be available as an option, not just exclusive to the Turbo GT.

Mobileye is developing a new InnoDrive based on its AI driving model which connects with other vehicles and even the roadway to make Level 3 & 4 autonomous vehicles acceptable in the EU. There have been no announcements for 2027 and it is expected to take longer to implement and receive EU regulatory approval, but it may be available in NA earlier where regulations are less restrictive.

No mention was made of CarPlay Ultra, although Porsche has been working with Apple and Android to develop alternative widgets for its current stock. However, it would not be easy to envision the technology Porsche had already committed to being available in MY2027 or earlier.

The choice to keep pouches is telling because the decision was not a recent one, leading to the conclusion that Porsche definitely covets a quick Charging, lighter, and energy-dense solid-state battery system from Samsung or QuantumScape, Porsche's California-based developer and partner in solid-state batteries (although it’s time commitment is before the end of the decade.

The fact that another EV model has been delayed until after 2030 means that the existing electric line will be the focus of more development. Just as the Macan last year, followed by the Cayenne, Boxster & Cayman in 2026, with hopefully a refocus on the Taycan in MY2027, probably known as J3.1.

At this pace of development, it seems unlikely that J1 and J1.2 will have a clear path to upgrading. I suspect that Porsche wants to put both in its rearview mirror and that any post-purchase available upgrades will be minimal.

The Cayenne is assembled in Bratislava in Slovakia at a VW factory alongside the Audi Q7/Q8 and VW Touareg – which are all the same platform.
I was in Bratislava for a few days in August and spotted train loads of them. Could let believe my eyes at the number there must have been.
