I've always installed an independent front+back dashcam on all of our cars, even on Teslas which had sentry mode. The main reason was that dashcams is not Teslas main business, nor is it safety related, so they don't QA their dashcam software as well, which has in the past left people with dashcam/sentry appearing to work, but videos were corrupt of completely missing.Stuff like this really makes me wish Porsche would give us Sentry Mode on the car, with the 4 cameras that already exist.
Really sorry it happened.
We had pretty good luck with the Tesla Sentry Mode cam. We caught someone keying my wife's car (painfully, it was only a few months old.) He was identified and prosecuted, and we were reimbursed for the repair.I've always installed an independent front+back dashcam on all of our cars, even on Teslas which had sentry mode. Plenty of sentry footage on youtube catching people doing bad things. My point was that I don't trust it. I owned 4 Model S over a decade, was active on Tesla forums, and seen a lot of examples of Tesla dashcam malfunctioning, especially on older, not most recent hardware (e.g. 2 years old or older). It usually manifested itself in missing clips, or unplayable clips. I didn't feel like validating dashcam functionality after every update, and those came twice a week sometimes. We had pretty good luck with the Tesla Sentry Mode cam. It works well but that one time I got a door ding on my new Plaid it didn't capture anything...Plenty of sentry footage on youtube catching people doing bad things. Which perfectly illustrates my point - it works most of the time, but not every time.It works well but that one time I got a door ding on my new Plaid it didn't capture anything...
