Hey guys - regular long distance commuting in my 2021 RWD Taycan starts tomorrow. Relying on public charging almost had me buy a non-electric model, but I really love the Taycan and am glad I made the purchase. Let’s hope I feel the same way after a few months into my commute (especially when winter hits).

Figured I would jot down some of my experiences, as I did a ton of research before buying my car and the information was really helpful. Let me know if there’s anything specific you would like to know and I’ll do my best to capture the details.

My Taycan:
  • 2021 RWD - delivery was in June 2021
  • 20” Turbo Aero Wheels w/ Summer Tires (I’ll get winter or all season tires when temp drops and post details)
  • Performance Battery Plus
  • Options: Sports Chrono, Electric Sound, 150kW/400V DC charger, Intelligent Range Manager, Premium Package
My Commute:
  • ~210 miles each way
  • Almost all highway between Delaware and NJ
  • 1-2x per month, with average stay 2-3 days
  • Once in NJ my commute will be ~10 miles each way.
  • 4 Electrify America charging stations along my route (none nearby once I’m in my final NJ destination)
  • My office has charging via Charge Point. It’s 6kW/hr, not free and limited to 5 hours at a time, so doubt I’ll use much
  • I’m planning to drive all winter. However, I don’t plan to use my Taycan if snow is forecasted during my trip - I have an AWD SUV for that
  • I typically keep my battery at 85% when charging at home. However, I’ll charge to 100% before these trips.

Cool! Enjoy the ride. No ACC or Innodrive though with all those highway miles?

My potential next Taycan will have more of the options I would like, once I’m convinced I can live with an electric car. I bought this one off the dealer lot.

That should work.

85% is enough in summer, in winter might need to charge to 100% - no need to charge on the way.

6kW*5h gives you just above 25kWh in the battery, not much. Any better destination charging?

Keep us posted how this works out for you...

Update on my commute this week and all went great!

I left early Monday morning and drove about 170 miles directly to the East Brunswick, NJ EA charging station.
  • Starting charge: 100% and 311 miles.
  • Arrival at EA in NJ: 45% and 131 miles.
  • Normal mode with Eco A/C on the entire team at 76 degrees.
Arrived at East Brunswick, NJ, EA chargers and all were empty. One of the 350kW chargers was stuck on “payment processing” and not usable, so I chose the only other 350kW charger.
  • Plug and Play did not work. This is only my second time using EA chargers, but the first time I used in Newark, DE, plug and play worked.
  • I launched the Porsche Connect app to try to initiate charging. I could not for the life of me select the charging station in the app. I could see it, but I couldn’t get it to acknowledge when I pressed on it.
  • I ended up switching to the Porsche NA charge app, which was much easier. I was able to click on the station and start charging with no problem.
I ran inside to Wal-Mart to get something to clean the windshield with. I got back about 16 minutes later and was almost at 80% charge, which I planned to stop once I reached that level. I unplugged at 80% and had 233 miles shown available.

Interesting observation at EA charger. As I was walking back from Wal-Mart to the car, a woman pulled up in a VW ID4 looking to charge. All of the other charging stations were open and offered 150kW. She pulled into the 350kW station next to me that was stuck in ”payment processing”, which she saw before she pulled in the station. When she got out we chatted and it was her first time taking a long distance road trip. She then walked over to my charging station and tried to use the second plug not in use. I explained that only one plug could be used at a time, which she wasn’t aware (and I’m not sure what would have happened if she did plug in? Would it have affected my charging?). I told her she could use any of the open 150kW stations, but she said she wanted to wait for mine since it would give her the fastest charge. Since I was leaving, I didn’t get into a conversation about her car’s charging ability. But, I see this is a educational issue and problem for 350kW charging availability. For planning purposes, think I’m going to assume I may only be able to get at 150kW charging station at times.

I ended up using the Charge Point chargers at my office, which over the course of two days were able to get me to 100% for my return home trip. The cost is $3 for 5 hours on both days (total $6), and since I was heading home during rush hour I didn’t want to have to stop at the EA station again and fight the traffic. I left my office Wednesday with 100% charge and drove directly home in normal mode with Eco A/C at 76. Was about 210 miles and when I got home I had a little over 100 miles in range left.

An amazing car to drive. Couldn’t love it more.

Very interesting thread. I saw a well equipped base Taycan at the dealer near me. I was going to trade my S but for the range. Am I to understand the 2WD model range is ~300? If this is upper 200 to 300 then I’d make the deal.

I’ll be following your thread with interest. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Yes, I’m consistently seeing range around ~300 miles. I almost always drive in normal mode with the a/c on when needed. Sport/Sport Plus only when showing off ;). Range mode I haven’t used.

I consistently get ~260 miles and always drive in Sports Plus with full AC on a Turbo S with Mission E wheels. I am very happy with the range since I don’t even try to optimize it.

Wow, with those large wheels and high HP version that's an amazing range and you're not even trying to be that efficient.

That's great. My 400 mile range Tesla is more like a 360 mile range so that's great. This car will be for my wife. Grocery getter, gym, errands, etc. It should be more than capable.

Its refreshing to see mileage above that touted by the manufacturer. I have a 2021 Tesla Model Y, which is rated at over 300 miles on a charge, and I have never gotten more than 225 miles on a full (90% to around 5%) charge. And that was in the spring season before AC and with no heat.

In the summer I am running around 210 miles on an 80% to around 5% charge.

I'm considering moving to a Taycan RWD, and one reason is the poor actual range of the Y.

Our RWD is used primarily for commuting about 25-30 miles per day. We charge to 80% nightly and are consistently seeing 211 mile range on the screen. We have the standard battery.
