The explosion is a steam explosion caused by the unbelievable amount of water they threw at it


Notice how Chinese firefighters (clearly more experienced in EV fires) never throw much water at it and train to do so?

The EV fire blanket instructions say it very clearly, once the fire blanket has been put on you are at most supposed to gently douse the blanket from the outside with a bit of water to cool it. NOT use a professional firefighter hose pulling thousands of gallons of water underneath it which will cause a steam explosion....

Even if you put no water on it, fire won't go thru it as long as the fire blanket is good quality. These blankets are rated for 1600C continuous for at least 8 hours.

Granted the car underneath it will burn itself to ashes, but this is non negotiable no matter what you do. Thousands of gallons of water wont change this fact either. Once EV fires starts nothing will stop it.

The blanket is there to prevent the EV fire from burning adjacent things be it cars walls etc (As in the blanket is the difference between your car burning itself to ashes and your car and your garage burning themselves to ashes!)

That video might have been a steam explosion but if you read the info in the other link it’s because putting out the fire doesn’t stop the buildup of explosive gases under the blanket.

Tons of information out there about the potential risks for firefighters using these blankets, how to deploy them safely and what to do if you see gas building up.

Either way, my only point was that these are to be used by PROFESSIONALS ONLY! Don’t risk your life for a car or house.

Also notice how much larger the blankets they use are than the ones in your picture? If not sealing air to the ground it wouldn’t be as effective.

Yes this is the keypoint, I think the blankets in your videos are about 1 generation behind what's being used currently in this part of the world. The blankets in the videos arent even fiber glass blankets...

The point of the blanket is to not let flames through, smoke is bad but nowhere near as bad as flames and obviously if you seal it and trap gases inside it will become a hot ballon and wont be a good day for anyone near it!

To expand my previous post. This article by the United States FEMA states:

The blanket eliminated the flaming, but battery thermal runaway propagation continued, resulting in the continued release and accumulation of flammable battery gases into the volume under the blanket."

The problem is using the blanket to suppress flames versus using the blanket to CONTAIN flames. Newest fiber glass blankets are porous which let oxygen through and also avoid build-up of hydrogen beneath it. They are also designed to not fully cover the car..... Designed to withstand 1600C continuous for many hours so that flames won't reach anything nearby...

Using a fire blanket to extinguish an EV fire and magically save the car is just a wet dream... Never gonna happen.
