2020 4S Shuddered/Shut Down While Driving

Hi All,
New to the forum, but had a significant issue last night. We were driving at low speed (25-30mph) and the car started shuddering and immediately shut down. Dash lit up with failure warnings (I mistakenly forgot to take a picture). We shut the car off and gave it a minute and started it back up and it drove home fine. Going to call roadside today as it probably should be towed vs driving given risk of complete shut down while driving (fortunately it was late and no one was near us on the road when it occurred). Found one thread that seems very similar but is 3 years old and would assume many software patches later that was resolved. Curious if anyone else has recently experienced. Car is new to me, CPO with 15k miles on it and presumably had all updates done before sale (know PCM is latest). Have only driven about 1k miles on it. Thanks!

Sorry you have had this happen to your car.
One thing to ask dealer is if they can confirm what updates/campaigns have been installed in your car.

Any chance Active Lane Keep (ALK) / Lane Keep Assist (LKA) was "on" - ? When on, it will interpret a period of driving with little steering input as driver inattention, shudder your wheel, then shut down the car for safety (as it assumes you've lost consciousness).

When shutting down did you lose all control (brakes/steering)? Or did you have the opportunity to pull over?

Thanks for responding. I don’t think so as we had just turned on to a new road and then it shut down after maybe 100-200 yards, so even if it was on I don’t think it would have been long enough to trigger. The warnings on the screen said something like engine/system failure too. Car is at dealership (towed), so hopefully the system logs will identify what occurred. Thanks.

Lost all control. Vehicle stopped itself in the abrupt shut down, but is what caused all the shuddering to get to a stop. We were stuck in the middle of the road when it happened. Very odd.

That’s crazy. I had a fear of this when my Model S battery was failing….service told me it could shut down at any point even while driving. Even to hear it happen like this is freaky
