Because the cooling ducts run behind the undertray. Any damage could impact on individual cells or groups of them.

The design and materials of the undertray on the latest model J1.2 is modified from the steel found on the original J1.1. It's very vulnerable to damage, particularly when the suspension is in the low position.

But good to hear insurance is paying for it.

That must have been one hell of a speed hump. There are legal maxima for hump dimensions - I would be taking the Council to court.......... assuming it was not Private Land. I have experience of reducing speed hump erroneous height due to Local Authoroity incompetence of installation.

n the UK, speed humps have a minimum length of 900mm, a minimum height of 25mm, and a maximum height of 100mm. The vertical face of the hump cannot exceed 6mm. The gradient should not be steeper than 1:10.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
  • Length: Speed humps must be at least 900 millimeters (90cm) long.

  • Height: The highest point of the hump must be between 25 and 100 millimeters (2.5cm and 10cm) higher than the road surface.

  • Vertical Face: No vertical face of the hump can exceed 6 millimeters in height.

  • Gradient: The gradient of the hump should not exceed 1:10, which means for every 10 millimeters of vertical height, there should be 1 millimeter of horizontal distance.
That's in theory but we know in practice many don't conform and no-one is out there enforcing. You just need to look at the scrapes and gouges on some of them to realise.

Great reply. Good reason not to run on low suspension setting at least on UK roads?!
