I'm one of the poor souls who bottomed out on a speed bump and have a 7mm dent on the undertray.
Porsche have advised that the battery is damaged, although I've had no issues or loss of range, they are going to replace the battery for £25,000 plus labour.

My question is, has anyone looked at re-purposing a used Taycan battery for anything else, such as home power?

I'm sure you could because it is probably just thousands of 18650 batteries in those modules. But it may not be worth it because Porsche will probably charge you a core charge if you want to keep the old battery.

They are LG pouch cells, but sure can be repurposed.

Have your insurers accepted the replacement cost ?

They can be re-used. You could get an external BMS that supports the Taycan battery module and an inverter that supports that BMS and the relatively low voltages of the 6S Taycan modules. So say a Victron MultiPlus-II 10KW or 15KW, and a BMS from these folks: https://wdrautomatisering.nl/supported-hardware/ - oh and that same Dutch vendor also offers a nice indoor/outdoor cabinet designed to hold and connect a whole pile of Taycan battery modules.

That basic gear plus a great deal of time, knowledge, care, and ancillary parts and you might save say $10K on a whole-house powerwall setup or even more on a LARGE powerwall. Worth it? Up to you.

Assuming you start with the Taycan larger battery, that's 33 modules to play with. Take 32 of them and run 16x2 for 44V nominal and that's a Powerwall up to 90KWH. That's like 3-4x larger than most folks need.

I have 30KW at home, but I was only willing to deploy lithium IRON phosphate batteries - the non burn-your-house-down-if-things-go-wrong kind. If you DIY a powerwall based on lithium ion cells from a Taycan or other car and it does go up in flames (possible but not likely) I worry that your insurance would use the DIY aspect to deny any coverage.
So we're talking the VERY small Venn diagram overlap of someone who can afford a Taycan, lives off-grid or otherwise needs a very large powerwall but doesn't want to buy one, doesn't care about much about home insurance, and wants a fairly complex and time consuming DIY project involving large amounts of power and flammable stuff. A FUN project, yes, but one carrying a small but highly consequential risk.

Just sell the modules on ebay if you do get it... and there's that; you make some of that 25k back

Just wondering why, with the low ground clearance, air suspension etc Porsche didn’t fit some sensors to auto-lift you and avoid such groundings given the vulnerability of the battery. Yes you can lift it manually but you won’t get them all.

That must have been one hell of a speed hump. There are legal maxima for hump dimensions - I would be taking the Council to court.......... assuming it was not Private Land. I have experience of reducing speed hump erroneous height due to Local Authoroity incompetence of installation.

n the UK, speed humps have a minimum length of 900mm, a minimum height of 25mm, and a maximum height of 100mm. The vertical face of the hump cannot exceed 6mm. The gradient should not be steeper than 1:10.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
  • Length: Speed humps must be at least 900 millimeters (90cm) long.

  • Height: The highest point of the hump must be between 25 and 100 millimeters (2.5cm and 10cm) higher than the road surface.

  • Vertical Face: No vertical face of the hump can exceed 6 millimeters in height.

  • Gradient: The gradient of the hump should not exceed 1:10, which means for every 10 millimeters of vertical height, there should be 1 millimeter of horizontal distance.

How did the confirm the battery is damaged ? Will they replace a single cell or the whole thing ?

the question everyone is thinking is if your insurance is covering it.

I'm pretty certain I know which speed bump is guilty, I know it bottomed out on it. However, there have been a few lesser scrapes and it is impossible to say which caused the damage. It was pointed out to me when the car was in for a recall

They had to remove the undertray (£6K) and then found a dent on the battery, they are replacing the whole thing, and apparently they can't get a reconditioned one.

The insurance say that they will cover it, just awaiting them notifying the dealership to this effect

Sorry to hear this man, I’m always cautious when I see speed bumps or pot holes. It’s a EV fear!

good luck ?? hope they replace it with the newer battery ?
I was told by the dealer that individual cells in the battery could be replaced so if there is damage why cant they just replace the damaged cells?
