Car Switched to Range Mode on it's Own...

Fellow forum members,

Twice now, when I am on relatively long trips involving highway driving, I noticed that the mode had switched to Range on it's own. The first time the range was capped at 60 mph which was difficult on the highway until I finally figured out what the problem was. Today it had switched to range with a limit of 90 mph which was actually fine with me. So I have 3 questions.

Has this happened to anybody else?

Is this a glitch or a feature of the car?

Can it be turned off?

did you have a route planned in the nav system? if yes the car determined that you needed to be in range to conserve energy
