Charging 12v battery

Does anyone know if you can trickle charge the 12v via the cigarette/cigar lighter socket in the boot/trunk?

Probably not recommended, as those are on a switched output, so at the very least you'd have to leave the car on.
And in modern vehicles there's quite a bit of monitoring going on on how many amps every individual subsystem and output pulls, I don't think the involved ECU's would like seeing it "pulling" negative amps.
