Wow, that’s expensive to have 220v/240v. In the US it doesn’t matter because everyone has 120V & 240V service in their homes but the 240V is used for electric ranges & HVAC. Many older homes only have 100A service so adding 25A to 50A for EV charging in garages means many homes have to upgrade their panels to 150A or 200A panels to accommodate 1 or 2 EVs.
If you have the panel capacity then it is easy to run the wire and install a 50A breaker but if you have a 100A panel (like I do) then you have to make sure you don’t run your oven/range when you’re charging. Most people in this situation usually charge from midnight to 6am when they are surely not cooking anything. If they have an EV with a huge battery like the performance plus battery and they drive over 100 miles a day or have two EVs to charge then I could see why they purchased the 22KW option.
I’m just lucky we don’t drive more than 100-150 miles a week or a max of 100 miles in a day maybe once or twice a month so we are finding even 240V is necessary for our low use case.

Quick note that everyone in Europe/UK has 220/240, since that's the electricity standard (no 110/120).

Parent is talking about 3-phase supply to get higher current/power than standard. Nobody in the US has 3-phase to their residential location.

We have a 100A panel, the charger is 35A, we have a Model Y and theTaycan. No problems with having only 100A, we don't dry clothes at night nor use the oven. Even if AC comes on, there is so little usage at night that it never causes an issue.
Yes, exactly. The oven is the biggest draw on 240V panels with a 50A breaker in most homes. That’s half of the entire panel capacity so 35A is no problem if you aren’t running your oven which is the biggest draw unless you have all 4 burners on high as well.

Not totally true, AC charging speed is determined by the lowest of the car and charger.
22kW requires 32A 3-phases which is virtually unavailable for residential around Europe, 11kW is the most people can get on residential on 3-phases and 7.2kW on 1-phase.
So except in the case of commercial premises with 22kW AC charger(s), the limiting factor is not the car.
Well maybe in the Netherlands it may be unusual, but that is not Europe. You seem to have a very high pricing scheme for 3 phase power. No such thing in France.

Here in France it is quite common to have 63 amp connection with 3 phase. It is quite common to run 22kW t home if the car can take it.

22 kW Is no problem at all at home. Around where I live we have a hell of a lot of 22 kW chargers AC and actually even higher power. See below.

It is quite nice to have that power available when you are going for a meal at lunchtime or in the evening.

We recently visited friends in Stockholm city centre and there they had a hell of a lot of 22 kW chargers along the streets. I counted to at least 40 - 50 places with parking within about 300 meters radius.

So Europe has home charging as well as a lot of public charging at 22 kW.

That makes sense. In the US I don’t even bother to charge at shopping malls where they only a have 6-10 5.5Kw to 6Kw chargers for their customers for 2 hours max so I can only put 11 -12 Kw in my vehicle which is just a waste of time waiting for a charger to free up so I can get another 25 to 30 miles of range.
Most of these places don’t even have 11Kw chargers but if they had 22kw chargers then I would actually want to use them even if it was limited to 1 hour.

What I fail to understand is why the car becomes immediately underivable just because the AC charger failed. Just like 2-3 cells fail and the car immediately turns into a brick. This extreme conservatism in their software algorithm causes the real damage from customer experience perspective. There is nothing like the drama of your 150K car leaving home on a flatbed and leaving you with the question of where else this could have happened and what headaches it could have caused.

It's not the same in the US because the power systems are different, but in the UK very few people actually use or need 22kW. Most use either 7.4kW (at home) or DC (on the road). Putting in 3-phase power at home (to deliver 22kW) can cost £3,000-£15,000 depending on whether they need to dig up the street.
Ok, to use your own example. For someone who paid for the 22kW Porsche OBC, then paid £15,000 to install a 22kW EVSE at one of their locations because that is what their usecase calls for (e.g. they go to that location, work there for 3 hrs, go back, but need the 22kW to charge enough to get back home, and cannot stay more than 3hr at the destination because they need to make a ferry connection which doesn't run at night). What would be a reasonable compensation for Porsche halving the charging performance and killing the above usecase? Price of 22kW OBC? OBC+£15,000 install costs, or perhaps a duplicate Taycan so the person can have one parked each each end charging slow, then switch which one they are driving? Or maybe Porsche should just cover the cost of 22kW DC charger installation for every location where this person ever charges at 22kW?

Where I do agree is that the option was charged for at point of sale, therefore if it is withdrawn there should be an appropriate refund. Hopefully Porsche will see reason on this point.

Porsche should reimburse you, no question about that.
Appropriate refund needs to address the impact, not the cost of a part. A hyperbolic example, Porsche cannot just disable both motors in the Taycan, and say the appropriate refund is just the cost of the motors, because it kills the usecase of driving (though I'm sure there would be people who use their Porsches as garage decorations who would say motors are not really needed by them ;) ).

Poor comparison.
It has nothing to do with the motors and/or performance of the car but with filling up the "tank".
It's like the original filling hose is unreliable and no longer available, therefore you'll become a smaller filling hose which takes filling twice as long.
If the original filling took 4hrs and new one takes 8hrs, that is a significant impact if you only have 4hr to fill. Most common real life usecase could be someone who has different electricity rates at different times, and having to charge longer increases their cost. A less common, but still possible is a sales person who is now losing hours every day to longer charging, therefore losing income.

To put things in perspective: my 11 kW OBC is filling my "tank" in 8 hours, that's enough to have it full in the morning.
If it was a 22 kW OBC it would be ready in the middle of the night and doing nothing until sunrise.
No one needs I don't need a 22 kW OBC anyway.
There, I fixed it for you. You are looking only at your own usecase, and lack imagination to conceive another other way people use their cars. As hard as it may be for you to believe it, not everyone only charges overnight.

So in EU, Porsche is:
- reimbursing the 22kW option price
- do a “commercial gesture” on top.
(Several cases on French Taycan Facebook group)

If you can prove that 22kW was a deciding factor (aka: you are using it daily to charge at work and 11kW would not allow you to recharge enough) then you have a (court) case for a buy back (or other settlement).

Why would such such proof be required? If Porsche was to disable the front motor on a Taycan which was bought with this option, would you have to prove in court that you in fact are using all motors every day and rear-wheel-drive Taycan would not get you where you need to go, in order to get compensation higher than the cost of the front motor part?

There are many use cases where a faster charging during hours with low rates would benefit the owner a lot. .
We have low rate electricity between 14.00 and 17.00 each day. Would be nice if you could avoid charging outside these times altogether.

In Norway and Sweden there is also rtes tht can vary during certain hours in the daymor night. If there is a lot of windpower available at night or weekends, you can even be paid to use electricity.

Tibber is one company that supplies equipment to control charging during these times. Then a 22 kW charger would benefit the owner a lot.

If the rates are the same all 24 hours I agree it may not be so important. But that is not for Porsche to decide.

Their argument about this is unbelievable.

Wow you did well there. That is a fantastic outcome.

In reality the value of a 22kW charger is close to nil once you drive the new car off the forecourt. When I sold my first Taycan (which did have a 22kW charger) there is absolutely no way they would have adjusted the price up or down by 1p if it had had 11kW rather than 22kW.

So if you can get the option price refunded, go for it. But it has depreciated to zero. Sadly that's the way with most of the Porsche options.
All options depreciate to zero within 3-5 years. A 4 year old base Turbo S is worth more as a tradein than a 4 year old 4S with options that made its MSRP higher than the Turbo S. Such is the nature of car trade. So what? It doesn’t mean the options are not worth anything to the original owner who ordered it, or even people who bought the car used (how would people react if they took their used car in for service, and dealer replaced leather seats with cloth, then told them leather wasn't worth anything because it was a used car).

Isn’t this all a bit unnecessary. The failure was when the owner was using his 11kv charger. He doesn’t own a 22kv charger so having a 11kv charging unit in the car means he has lost nothing. If on a reasonable distance journey a recharge is needed then I very much doubt you would go to (if you can find one in the UK) a 22kv charger rather than a 250kv one.

If you go to the expense of taking Porsche to court what is your loss in your circumstances - the court wouldn’t take into account some highly theoretical once in a lifetime possible event.

The court or Porsche’s lawyer would probably ask you - would you have not bought the car if it only had a 11kv capacity. I doubt the honest answer would be yes.

The car is 4 years old so I’m sure the court wouldn’t take that into consideration too.

I highly doubt it.
You would find a solution for that one occasion, I'm sure.
Most problems you can find a solution for. Even a bricked Taycan has a solution (take a bus, taxi, ride-share, buy a new car, etc), but that doesn't mean people should just accept it and pay for the solution (in time and/or money) that the original product was supposed to solve.

There are people on this forum that live with 120V charging too. It doesn't mean that Porsche should be free to disable 240V charging completely.
