Hello,

I am new to 2021 4S ownership. When driving to work say 30 mph, is it normal to see consumption at 65kwh/100miles, then slowly drops to 39-41 kWh/100 miles after 10 min? Temp seems to affect the higher consumption in the am.

I see the same, and the AC seem to be to blame (at least in part). Perhaps a super cold battery that needs to be warmed up a bit also contributes.

I am expecting and hoping this to improve when it gets warmer (I only have my Taycan since November)

Good point. It is cold. 35-40F in the am here. Could be a factor with a cold battery. I see preheat is an option with charging settings, but I think this only does the interior cabin, not the battery

True, you can’t control battery heating. But the car certainly does influence battery temp, and afaik really cold batteries are inefficient and the car will heat it up as needed (and even more to prepare for charging stops).

Perfectly normal. The first miles your car neads to heat the cabine with energy from the battery. That can take quite some energy at low temperatures. The battery it self warms up while driving from being used. If you pre condition the car while plugged in before departure it is better. Or when temperatures rise in spring.

It is really inefficiënt when driving short stretches at cold temperatures because much energy is used for heating.

Outside ambient temp when low or very low will have a direct impact on range estimate and consumption.

AC and cabin heating will play a significant role also.

Short journeys don't help either.

All EVs with current battery technology behave i n the same way.

Remember that ICE vehicles are thirsty when cold also.

When one resets trip data on their ICE car, they can see consumption up to 99l/100km or similar. Not sure, why nobody had questions about that before, but they typically roll their eyes when a similar thing is observed in their EVs.

OP - just change your trip data to “since last charge” to get more meaningful data between charging sessions.

Bear in mind that the basic consumption data is largely a matter of simple division.....energy consumed divided my miles driven. Thus, when you begin a trip and use large amounts of energy to accelerate to speed, the small distance traveled results in large apparent kwh/mile. As one adds distance the average includes intervals of low consumption, recuperation and coasting.
After a longish trip one is likely to see something in the 2.7-3.5 kwh/mile.

Totally normal. I am in the same temp and driving conditions and see the same reported consumption dynamics.

3.5 - not in a Taycan J1.1!

Super interesting. I turned off my heater Fan. I saw my consumption drop to 30kwh/100 miles. The lowest of my short ownership period

our cars are super sensitive to A/C and the hearter fan, and how it affects our range.

Lesson learned

For sure, in fair weather I turn everything off, and can get impressive range.
