I can’t find 100% info on this.
Do I need to pay for Porsche connect to check my taycan battery level? I’ve owned a Tesla model 3 then model S which allows to to check battery level and other things via the app. And as of yesterday my taycan 3 year free connect ran out and I can’t see battery level.
does this mean I need to pay $429 Australian dollars to have this feature?

You absolutely want this and you can do a lot more than checking your battery level. This sounds like a large subscription cost, but you had a benefit of getting your car used with hopefully massive depreciation, so this is a small price to pay to have full and expected Taycan experience.

I use it to schedule charging, check trip stats, pre-heat cabin, check tire pressure, user manual, etc. The point being it is a good value for what you get and now it is the only way to do those things as they phased out the online version that I preferred for trip planning for example given larger map.

I fully agree. If you are paying £100K for a car (and far more in dollars!!!!) then it seems daft to forgo £240 for what is quite useful stuff. Yes its a pain. Yes Porsche are ripping us off but that is the price of owning the best EV in the world (despite multiple recalls and time without the car when it is being fixed).
I renewed my subscription a few weeks back and with a car like this, you cant 'not have' an option to heat up the car to melt the ice before you get in it on a freezing winter morning.

It is not a rip off at all. SW developers cost $100 an hour. You pay those costs.

I said the same in another thread this week and got slated for suggesting it's an essential service to get the most out your 100k+ car. Clearly the value of Porsche Connect depends on the day of the week you post about it :)

I stand firm - why buy a 100k car and disable some of the key features over the sake of a couple hundred quid a year

I’m hoping the Porsche Connect app being paid for on a yearly basis will insure the support for my 2021 Taycan indefinitely or at least the next 15-20 years. If the app were free Porsche would eventually have to decide if it is worth supporting a free service indefinitely but as a paid service they get to cover their costs as well as promote long term customer service with their loyal customers.
