under what circumstances do people carry their EVSE in the vehicle?

I don’t intend to do long road trips, but if I did, I would simply packs the PMCC in its man bag and through it in the trunk.

is there any reason to also have one to hand? Or is it safe to rely on being able to get to a DC Charger?

I’m familiar with that thread; my question is different - do I actually need to carry…..
You don’t really need to carry. I carry a compact lightweight EVSE (Mustart travel model) for peace of mind. Purely psychological. Never used it on the road, actually, in 15 months of ownership.

Yes; I put one in my Amazon cart and then decide to cancel. If I plan for a long drive, I can always remove the one from the dock - but I don’t want to do that all the time and don’t want to buy one and it just sit in the trunk or frunk.

What is the difference between PMCC and EVSE? Isn’t the PMCC an EVSE?

Yes it is; but my PMCC is mounted in the dock. Even if it wasn’t, I don’t want to pack and unpack it every time.

I’m debating whether I buy a Mustart and keep it in the car; but not convinced I need to - hence my question.

Gotcha. I didn’t think of it that way since I have a separate EVSE for my garage.

I don’t find a need to carry one. I understand why some people want peace of mind but I figure that if I had one with me and used it outside the home it would likely be Level 1 charging and not worth it. At least in the US, you are not going to just stumble upon a NEMA 14-50 outlet on the side of the road. Plus I really don’t do long road trips on the Taycan. I appreciate that even Level 1 could get you the juice needed to get to a real charger so I get the peace of mind reasoning.

you need to carry you own EVSE less and less and less with each passing day/week/month…
  • I would carry one for piece of mind - but utilization remains low
  • I carry one for track days (when tracking my GT3) so that I can charge the car while at the track via the 14-50’s littering the paddock
  • I would carry one when I “know” I’m going to need to charge at a “bare” 240V plug some place remote
you can probably do with out - but it would suck if you need it and don’t have it - I keep one in the frunk, but it rarely comes out.

and yes the PMCC/PMC+/Mustart _IS_ an EVSE…they are one in the same.
