Help! Can't Dislodge Wheel From Hub

Hey folks,

I'm in the middle of swapping my wheels from winters to summers. I've done this multiple times before and always have some trouble getting the wheel off.

The car is jacked up (on two jackpoint stands). All bolts are out on the front right wheel and I have two guide bolts threaded in. I can't dislodge the wheel from the hub. Usually some twisting and a hefty tug will do it. I've tried giving it a good knock with a rubber mallet. No luck. I'm hesitant to try anything more extreme in case I cause damage.

Any tips or tricks to dealing with this?

Success! I don't know why I didn't think of this before. I had only been tapping with the rubber mallet from the front. Tapping from behind did the trick (inner edge of the tirewall, giving better lateral torque). Also learning about galvanic transfer and anti-seize treatment. Onwards and upwards!

I could see this happening to me. I bought two JackPoint jack stands recently for this very purpose this fall. Tired of lugging the wheels and tires around to shops for my winter/summer swaps. Thanks for sharing your solution.

I’ve had to use sledge hammers before on other cars. I too changeover winter/summer wheels twice a year. That frequency helps thing not get stuck. Put some aluminum anti-seize on the outside of the hub. Where it meets the wheel. That’ll prevent it. Use a thin coat, as you don’t want it to get on the brakes.
