The electrician who installed the circuit for my Wallbox told me about an EV wiring installation he did recently.
Customer with a Tesla - who has a hard-wired Tesla EVSE - wanted a separate 14-50 receptacle installed in garage so that a visiting EV could also charge.

The electrician installed the circuit and the Hubbell heavy-duty receptacle. When they tested the circuit with a portable, mobile EVSE which has a 14-50 plug - he thought it was a Tesla brand - the car would not charge. The charger kept showing an error.

He double-checked all the connections. Everything was correct. Since it wouldn't charge, the electrician replaced the Hubbell with a cheap 14-50 receptacle. The cheap receptacle worked fine. He said that all the wiring/connections for both receptacles were the same. He has ordered another Hubbell receptacle to try in case the first one was bad.

Have you seen anything like this before? Any idea why one receptacle would charge and the other would not?

this makes no sense…and I'm not sure why you need a 14-50 for visiting EV's if you have a function EVSE…will be interesting to see results of a new outlet - an outlet is pretty simple to test with a multi-meter - surprise the electrician didn't test the outlet.

@daveo4EV Followup. Got email from electrician. He replaced the original receptacle with Hubbell and charging works fine now.
