It’s has been stated there are no [external] differences between models aside from insignia, but I noticed there is a very subtle difference in the air intake design below the hood. Rwd/4S/GTS models above. Turbo models below. It’s not just paint, either; they are physically different.

There are subtle differences like this. Fans who know the cars and options can tell you more. For example, in the USA, a Turbo S will always come with powered charge port and ceramic brakes, so if you see one without, you know it's not a Turbo S. The front lip one is a known difference, someone pointed it out to me in another thread a while back when replying to my comment about stripping all Turbo branding from my build.

I’m wondering why they chose to not differentiate them. A Turbo in every other Porsche has clearly different bodywork. It seems they should have offered the Turbos with sport design package as default. Strange.

I was thinking about that too and it could be due to aerodynamics and range. I would guess that anything other than very subtle differences affected the range more than Porsche wanted.

Maybe decided that like some other manufacturers, it's not worth it, or even hurts sales, to significantly differentiate the appearance of the different trims?

Then they could have still had sport facia/diffuser as standard.

That doesn’t really make sense, why would you not want to differentiate a halo mode?

Corvette has been doing it for a long time. Tesla too. Maybe, and I'm just speculating here, they end up selling many more lower end cars if they don't look much different from the high end. Porsche already sells more lower trims than the halo trims, so if keeping them looking similar loses 10% of halo sales but adds 10% to all other trims, it obviously translates into tons more sales. It may also help keep the lower trim resale values higher.

It’s much easier to see the difference in a Turbo (not Turbo S) that is light-colored (e.g., Silver). The part of the lower sill that is painted is a lot more obvious. In darker cars and the Turbo S, the lower sills are dark enough in color to obscure the difference. It’s different enough that Suncoast sells conversion kits for the 4S to switch. Even so, it’s quite subtle and something that is mostly noticed by other Taycan owners/afficionados.

They can also just get painted facias, and the carbon sport facia option has that angular difference as well.

Horses for courses, I'm a fan of the stealth look myself, not more frippery. Given the most strangers see a car for longest is likely from the rear whilst in traffic then leaving the model designation on the rear is a pretty clear indicator if want to show it off (nothing wrong with that, as said all down to personal preference. For me I'd rather surprise someone if in the mood).

Different people buy cars for different reasons. Some buy the car to drive, some to impress others. A good test of which one you are would be asking yourself whether it would bother you if people could buy a lower trim/performance/functionality car than yours, but then make it look exactly like your car by adding some plastic badges for a couple of hundred dollars?
