Mobile charger overheating after recall service

Geez. My local dealer finally received the replacement cord for my mobile charger from the January 2023 recall notice and installed it a couple of weeks ago. The recall was supposed to fix an overheating problem.
The first time I tried charging my 2022 Taycan Cross Torismo with the "fixed" charger, , it overheated and stopped charging. The dealer picked up the car and had it for 8 days and couldn't figure out what went wrong. They claim Porsche US can't figure it out either.
Anyone else having similar experience?

what is the ambient temp where you're trying to charge - the 'fix" won't make things better if we're in the middle of an epic heat wave…

but I'd suggest you give up on the Porsche EV Charger (EVSE) and get a quality product the Porsche stuff is irredeemable

the Porsche EVSE has had issues in North America for the entire duration of the Taycan product cycle…

Charge Point Flex or Tesla Universal Wall Charger or Wallbox will do the trick and they won't overheat.

I am still waiting for my recall check (sent in the request in March). When I emailed Porsche again at [email protected] I get an undeliverable error message! Does anyone have any information on this? Thanks

My daughter has a Tesla Model 3 Highland and I opted for the reimbursement route and picked up the Tesla Universal Wall Charger for home charging (no, I have not actually gotten my reimbursement check, yet, <sigh>). It comes with the NACS to J1772 adapter which stores inside the unit when not needed and works great with my GTS as well as hers. The only small issue I had was configuring it for 40 amps since I have a 50 amp circuit installed, but that was a one-time configuration setting. I recommend it, even if you don't have a Tesla to charge with it.

I had the same issue the last few weeks here in upstate NY with the heat wave. I installed the Tesla Universal Charger I purchased with the Porsche recall check and all is now good.

@RetroQueequeg if you have a 50 amp circuit then why did you set it to 40 amps? I set mine to 50 amps and its is charging at the 9kw rate as before with the Porsche charger. I ordered a new 60 amp breaker and will upgrade my circuit and reset the charger back to 60 amp so I can charge at 10.4 kw.

One other note for those interested since the old NIMA plug required 6/3 wire. When I did the change over to the Tesla charger which only requires 6/2 wire I just put a wire nut on the white neutral wire and tucked it away in the charger housing

A breaker/circuit of this type is not designed to carry 100% of it's rating continuously, per NEC rules to avoid thermal issues (aka melting cables/potential fire, worst case). Search around for the 80% rule and continuous current.

Also, you should never just increase the breaker size without ensuring the wire size used is designed to carry that load. Good luck!

the configuration page for the TUWC (Tesla Universal Wall charger) is for the "breaker size" - once you've selected the the breaker size that matches your actual physical breaker the unit adjusts it's charging rate to be correct for the breaker size (50 amp breaker means 40 amp charge rate for example)…

the unit comes by default set for a 60 amp breaker - you need to use the webportal on the unit or the TeslaOne app in the iOS app store to configure the unit to match your breaker size.

acceptable breaker sizes are 15 to 60 amps.

joining the TWUC's webportal is trickier than it needs to be so yeah - that's one issue with an otherwise excellent EVSE - but the configuration is just a one time thing and once you're past it you need never do it again.

for those not wishing to suffer with Tesla products - ChargePoint Flex is the next great product to use instead of the Porsche POS-PMC+/POS-PMCC

@RetroQueequeg as @daveo4EV said the manual tells you to match the breaker and the charger then automatically adjust, BTW the calculation is (50 x 240 = 12kw max * .8 = 9.6 kw safe). Also our local code calls for 6 gage wire for this application, this could be different in Texas where you are. When I asked our local codes guy I was told that it's the same gage wire for 50 or 60 amp.
