Re post-2020 Taycan HV battery chemistry changes but nothing stated official:
Is a Porsche TSB "official"?
;)
I find this conflicting.

My battery was never replaced.

As part of ARA4 recall, they replaced a whole battery module, c11 if I remember correctly, with one from a 2023 car.

So if the TSB would be correct, the car wouldn’t work, since the modules are different and require different programming.

but yet, the car works. And the range is all there

As far as I know both have identical chemistries, NMC. Back in 2021, the 2021 model had however newer software running on the ECU responsible for thermal management. But 2020 was updated also, with the big PCM update which updated most ECU (similar to the new PCM update for j1.2 which updates most ECUs also)

So that TSB might have been correct in 2021, where due to different thermal management version software they would treat them as different batteries? But post PCM update, it’s clearly not the case, as proven by my own car…

A different TSB, dealing with replacing individual modules in 2020 Taycans, was issued in 2023.

So from this we deduce that 2020 uses modules B1.7+, porsche nomenclature.
And 2021+ uses modules 4M - porsche nomencalture
both of chemistry NCM712 chemistry.

After some quick reserch, 2020 was using LG Chem E66A NCM712
And 2021+ was using LG Chem E78 NCM712

LG Chem E66A

  • Nominal Capacity: 65 Ah
  • Minimum Capacity: 63,5 Ah
  • Nominal Voltage: 3,657 V
  • Nominal energy: 237,7 Wh
  • Minimum energy: 232,2 Wh
  • Thickness: 11,7 mm
  • Width: 104 mm
  • Height: 350 mm
  • Volume: 0,425880 L
  • Weight: 897 g
  • Volumetric Energy Density: 648 Wh/L
  • Gravimetric Energy Density: 259 Wh/kg
  • Chemistry: NCM 712

LG Chem E78

  • Capacity: 78 Ah
  • Voltage: 3,65 V
  • Length: above 500 mm (exact dimensions aren’t known)
  • Weight: 1.073 g
  • Gravimetric energy density: 265 Wh/kg
  • Chemistry: NCM 712
So it's a packaging difference. Seeing as how the actual porsche enclosure and module sizes & overall capacity didn't change, likely production of LG Chem E66A in poland was replaced by LG Chem E78, resulting in the change for porsche

We love our 2020 4S. Same as other said, no remote lock/window but does have smart lift.

Bought used. All issues were covered with recall or free replacements.

- Brake line recall
- Heater (replaced with updated version)
- Battery Tested ( think this was a lot of years though) .. no issues as of now.

Other then that it's been solid.

Considerations:

Determine if the car will come with a charging package. Most of us are still charging free at the public EV fast chargers (30 minutes).

The only expensive maintenance items is tires and brakes. Make sure it's got a good condition window screen. These are expensive and require calibration when installed. This is really the only items you can negotiate with.

All Taycans are relatively low prices now. So if the couple options mention above are important to you, consider newer one. All taycans come with a variety of build options. So make sure to compare especially the Turbo models. We were lucky and our 4S previous owner really put some extra money into the interior options and we are the benefactors now.

Ask which recalls were replace/checked on the VIN your buying and request to review the service history. 2020 the heater was a big issue. Brake lines were an issue. If these been dealt already, then less headache for you.

Just plan for the Taycan to continue depreciation and if you don't love the car in 6 months, trade in for something else.. -> (Electric Macan sounds tasty.. but consider leasing it to avoid the depreciation on EV's)

Overall the consensus is the Taycan is a great EV compared to other brands. We've tracked, autocrossed and daily drive/road trip ours and it's been great car. There is almost no maintenance cost and not paying $4 gallon really is adding up to a saving for us.
