Snow walls, surface water, fog, probably <5c, whoah slippery.A 1:20 selection of yesterday's Furka+Grimsel dride:

Thanks. Conditions were actually quite good, not slippery (even with PSM partly off) - unless one wanted to make the rear wheels dance a bit.Snow walls, surface water, fog, probably <5c, whoah slippery.
Chapeau!

Bad news. A big storm hit parts of Switzerland on June 21st. A13, the highway to S Bernardino is impacted. It will take some time to fix it.Thanks! Will check that out.
This is what Google maps says. Road closed until Jan 2025??
It depends if you privilege scenery, spirited driving or both. Fluela : scenery is nice but can only be driven well late at night or very early, otherwise crammed with folks slowly hauling their poop from valley to valley in their RVs (to each their own, I guess). Also the initial segment (e.g. Selfranga to Davos before ascending to fluela) is just a pita . 99% of non-peak times I'd just take the vereina tunnel instead (car on train: 15 mins).I did the Susten in very thick fog two years ago. Couldn’t see 5 meters ahead. Had to rely on gps to see where the corners were. Quite an experience.
Planning to do Davos - Italy this year. Probably Fluela - Samedan - Bernina and return the next week to Ischl via Mals - val mustair - zernez - scuol - Serfaus
Any tips for alternative routes ? I did the Stelvio two years ago and Gross Glockner last year.
Davos is our first stop from Belgium. But we can also make the first stop in Zermat and have a selfie with the Matterhorn. And do the Furka and Gotthard. Or stay in Bern / Interlaken and do the Grimsel - Furka - Gotthard. I have lived in Bern for 4 months and really like the region.
Thanks a lot ! I think I will try the pass anyway. We are traveling on a Friday and a Sunday. Should be less busy.It depends if you privilege scenery, spirited driving or both. Zermatt: Täsch-Zermatt should be open again tomorrow.
mals-mustair-zernez: that is some serious fun via the ofenpass, amazing scenery and a great drive, as long as you choose the time wisely (early morning or 8pm or later). bonus point: from mals onward you are in italy a bit more flexibility about speed limits ()
Gotthard pass: nondescript, some views but the drive is rather boring and often very busy with ingenious people trying to avoid the massive queues at the Gotthard tunnel.
Well that explains it all. Thanks for the info.Bad news. A big storm hit parts of Switzerland on June 21st. A13, the highway to S Bernardino is impacted. It will take some time to fix it.

It will take quite a long time: they have to wait for the water to recess before they can even start the work.I really hope that can be sorted out soon, but looks quite bad. Hope no one was hurt during that episode
Fluela offers good views plus you can check out Davos, which you could not if you take the car-train vereina thing. RVs are a summer curse trudging across mountain passes, dreaming of cramming into campsites a meter apart and sharing the joy of communal toilets. Thanks a lot ! I think I will try the pass anyway. I am doing the trip for the scenery. No intention for spirited driving. But I don’t like to be hanging behind a fellow Dutchmen trying to howl his 2 axel caravan up a mountain pass with a Ford Fiesta 1.0 liter.
In my experience Swiss RV do move aside and wait a bit if they have collected a queue of cars behind them. Others haven’t understood that concept.
That would really ruin a trip. Not for the speed only but more for the scenery and being stuck behind a big white wall.
Yes indeed. I used a digital one this year. Same for Austria but that has been quite some while. This thread is making me want to drive the alps. First summer in years that we are not road-tripping in Switzerland. Is it true the vignette has finally gone "digital" ? Hate pealing that sticker off our windscreen.
Yes, 40chf online (the sticker version still exists) : https://via.admin.ch/shop/dashboardIs it true the vignette has finally gone "digital" ? Hate pealing that sticker off our windscreen.
Yes, but Austria has an annoying rule that you have to purchase it at least 14 days in-advance of activating it. I think its because you have 14 days to "change your mind" – so they want to avoid people doing so while its in operation.Yes indeed. I used a digital one this year.
