I know this is a bit mundane but…. I’m about to collect my new CT4S with off-road pack. Any owners out there have tips on U& speed bumps? Will I be ok in normal mode or do I need to be using the lift function? I know some might be worse than others of course but I guess there must be a standard size…..

In general I was fine in normal mode in my RWD ST. I would use the lift mode for steep car park ramps though.

Depends on the bump, speed and angle of approach!

Most bumps are fine (low speed) on all models of Taycan but I would suggest using SmartLift for ones where you know a little extra height is advantageous. This makes it a seamless experience but remember to slow down for the bump and allow the NAV function to catchup and active the lift for you.

Generally I’ve found the normal and sport ride height fine on my saloon 4S (I use sport as the default) but use lift if the speed bump is higher. With some of the narrow speed ‘pillows’ in my area the car is so wide that it just straddles them, but even so, in the sport setting it doesn’t scrape.

I’m sure this has changed since first getting the car (nearly 4 years ago!) but in Range mode it wouldn’t let me use the lift function, which was really annoying and resulted in a few scrapes catching the very front.

My CT4S goes over all the speed bumps around here in Normal without needing to lift.

My 4CT is fine over most bumps but I've mapped a few extreme ones where Lift is activated.

I don't have the offroad pack on my 4CT, and it is fine. As the others have said, slow down on approach, and for those where you are concerned, use the lift and have the car save it. I go over multiple speed bumps every day when taking the kids to school, and I have learnt which ones are a bit risky in terms of height and severity. Also, watch out on steep ramps going into car parks. A good tip is to go into them diagonally if you are concerned (if it is possible/safe to do so), but lift is more than adequate for any i have encountered. Welcome to the club. Have fun in you new car.

The image above shows ride heights by model and suspension setting.
Compare against the UK speed bump permitted height, which is 4”/101mm. Some seem to be higher. Some are longer than others, which may be significant for approach angle.
Other threads here have examples of dents a little above 3mm to critical areas of the ‘battery protection plate’ resulting in £40k battery replacement insurance claims.
Default CT settings are probably ok.
Given the purpose & location of speed bumps and the 20/30mph speed limits applicable, there’s nothing to be gained from using anything other than a normal suspension setting and drive mode in urban locations. Slowing to less than 20mph, sufficiently to store/operate Smart Lift, becomes a habit.
Porsche bushes can be fragile things and expensive to replace.

Thanks all. It was reading the threads that had references to 3mm dents that got me asking. Sounds like normal mode plus lift for the big ones plus ramps should serve me ok.

Yep, to put it in perspective your normal ride height is 156mm and a BMW 2 series convertible is 128 mm.

I had a 4S CT for 2 years so 10mm lower than years and never had any issues. I've now got a 4S ST so 127mm in normal mode and I haven't scraped any yet.

In the UK the legal max height of a speed bump in 100mm.

The loweest the taycan will go is 104mm.

I live in NW london where there are tons of speed bumps and I have never scrapped the bottom of the car even in the lowest setting.

The only danger is if you go too fast you will bump the front of the car on the way down.

The local council is responible for damage caused to cars by out of spec speed restriction devices.

Speed bumps must meet the legal conditions outlined in the Highways (Road Humps) Regulations 1999, which include:
  • Maximum and minimum heights of 100mm and 25mm respectively
  • A minimum length of 900mm
  • No vertical face to exceed 6mm in height

? ? ? ?
Most of the traffic calming bumps around here are humps which are not 900mm long and not very wide either, there is one that complies with that with a zebra crossing over it near a primary school.
Many have potholes due to the extra load they cause and quite a few ridges get installed.
I had better get in touch with the police and get them to prosecute the Vale of the White Horse council!
