White Taycans crash more!

Yes, not the color itself. My title is misleading. White is generally a safer color. My hypothesis here is that of buyers of RWD Taycans, people who buy a white RWD Taycan are three times more likely to have been in an accident (present company excepted of course). It’s not that white isn’t safe, it’s the drivers who choose white RWD.

Oh phew. I feel a bit better, but now concerned I may have a split personality. I'll ask myself and report back.

See original post. Out of 135 2022 and 2023 RWD cars 1 silver and 1 blue, but 8 whites. I thought that was interesting. Probably not enough sample size for a meaningful answer for the other colors, but white? That’s an outlier.

I saw, what is missing from that post is how many cars of what color total (i.e. color distribution of the whole set, not just accident distribution).

I only needed to count the total white for my calc of white vs other colors, but OK you are making me work. It isn’t easy because Taycans have many non standard colors. But roughly:
White 35
Blue 28
Black 23
Red/Burgundy 8
Silver/gray 13
Green 3
Misc 25

I was on Autotrader in the US and I noticed a trend. To confirm, I searched RWD 2022 and 2023 Taycans nationwide. In this pool, 10 out of 135 for sale have an accident history and 35 out of the 135 are white.

Of the accident cars,
1 is silver
1 is blue
8 are white

By Bayes Rule, if you drive a 2022 or 2023 RWD that is white, you have a 23% chance of getting in an accident. This versus the 10/135 = 7% chance for all 2022 and 2023 RWD cars. Several of the white RWDs are in Florida - a retirement state. My wife says white is the color for retired old men. Silver isn't far behind.

Recommend checking in with your wife’s boyfriend as to what he drives. May provide insight on how best to stay out of trouble.

No I already explained that in #4 above. A white RWD Taycan is three times as likely to have been in an accident than the general pool. That accounts for the disproportionate higher number of white RWDs in the pool. Autotrader lists practically all cars besides local private sales, so it is a decent sample.

Statistically this is not a decent sample. The margin of error on a sample size this small is huge.

If you want to know the REAL data on if color selection has an impact on crash statistics- talk to the insurance companies and get quotes.

There used to be a myth that red cars were more expensive to insure because people figured they were more likely to speed, but it’s a myth.

Only more expensive car to insure is one with an expensive custom paint. But only because it’s more expensive to repair.

Want to know why there are more crashed white cars on auto trader at the moment for sale? Probably because they take longer to sell with a bad Carfax record and white may take longer to sell as well as it’s a more boring choice for a Porsche.

Not really serious but I thought it was interesting that of all the colors the accident cars were practically all white ones. I agree there are many factors, but whatever those are, it’s interesting. As I said it is almost certainly not the color itself. It’s the type of people that choose a white RWD - the plainest, lowest variant. I guess black and blue accident Taycans could be snapped up faster as well.

For example, I could @hifi239's own data and calculations to claim that white Taycans survive more accidents than any other color - other colors get totaled at a much higher rate than white Taycans, therefore cannot be resold afterwards. So, black Taycans were a decent chunk of cars sold, yet not a single repaired one - so now the question is, are black Taycans weaker somehow, or do people who drive black Taycans only get into accidents which total the car, or are people who buy black Taycans ultra perfectionists who send their cars to the crusher after any accident?

Yes! It’s called survivorship bias. See here. Perhaps White RWD owners are not driving like they stole it, and, unlike, say, Mamba Green drivers, their accidents do not total the car.

Yep. Or perhaps white Taycans are just most reliable, spending the least amount of time in the shop, therefore more time on the roads, increasing their chance of being in an accident?

@hifi239 , if you had mileage of all the above cars, you could calculate mile per accident per color to give you an additional data point to refine theories (e.g. identify the daily drivers vs. show car colors).
