Windshield replacement

I got my windshield cracked driving behind a semi-truck. I guess I deserved that but nonetheless, the crack was relatively small so I had it filled professionally. Unfortunately, while it stabilized the crack, the crack is still very much visible and an eyesore. I am thinking about replacing the entire windshield. Can this be done by a 3rd party vendor or do you think it should be done by the dealer?

Usually windshield replacements are done by specialist glass installers. Most dealers will out source this to another shop even if you bring the car into them.

That being said, the Taycan's camera system will need recalibration after windscreen replacement. So you'll need a trip to the dealer anyway. easier to just let them do everything... FYI not gonna be cheap, the recalibration alone is about 800USD.

Sorry to hear the bad news. We had a third party vendor do the repair at the dealership. Here's our experience, and I hope some of this will prove useful for your situation:

The windshield of my wife's Audi SUV got two cracks in two months. Each event required a complete windshield replacement because the cracks quickly grew to be longer than six inches (15 cm). The windshield is covered by my auto insurance. If the crack is shorter than six inches, my insurance won't replace the windshield, so take a picture with the crack and send it to your insurance provider.

I called the Audi dealer. The Audi dealer had a preferred provider (Safelite) and gave me their phone number.

I called Safelite, and their rep asked questions about if the Audi had anti-collision (yes), rain-sensitive wipers (yes), auto high-beam detection (yes), etc. That was enough for Safelite to say they would have to battle the insurance company because the insurance company wants to replace with the cheapest windshield possible instead of original equipment from the manufacturer (OEM) that requires re-calibration. But since OEM was required for safety, Safelite was confident they could win the battle (which they did). The Audi dealership had OEM replacement windshields in stock.

We didn't have to pay anything extra to get the windshield replace either time. Safelite came to the Audi dealership only on selected days. Replacement took most of the day as the Safelite technician was replacing multiple windshields, and the Audi technician was doing the recalibrating.

Back in April my windshield cracked after a small rock hit right where the glass meets the roof. The crack rack ran down and across right in front of my face. I called Safelite and the windshield cost $3200 plus it would have to be calibrated at the dealer. I called the dealer, owned by Penske, and they quoted the same price. It took 2 months to get the windshield from Europe. The work was done flawlessly and all systems work like new. If you don’t have glass coverage on your insurance call today. I had no out of pocket cost for this plus they gave me a loaner to drive. I think our Taycans are just too exotic for aftermarket glass companies to handle especially when you load your car up with all the tech goodies that I did on mine!
