Winter tyres on today

Just had winter wheels put on today, will be interesting to see if I see any improvement although it is still fairly mild in the UK.

I always used to swap to winter tyres with previous performance cars but haven't over the past couple of years as didn't really think that they really made that much difference, but think they may on the Taycan.

I have experienced some in-consistency with the breaking, and am sure it ties in with a couple of re-calls I have had. All cars will obviously break differently and you can adapt to that, but what I find a little un-nerving is that I sometimes get a different amount of travel on the breaks and an overall feel, which is a little more difficult to take into account for.

We have a TS and also a CT TS on the fleet so am going to take them out for a spin to see how different the breaking and consistency are on those.

Differences in braking can be attributed to whether it is regenerative braking (motors only) or when more pressure is applied then its actual pads on the discs. This will alter the feel. I know what you mean however - the pedal can go 'loose' as if pressure has been released but this only happens when you are barely moving - normal operation it should be fairly consistent.

I don't plan on getting winter tyres / rims - can't justify the cost and the car coped really well in the snow we had last year. I don't do much daily driving so my use case is likely different and can clearly see the safety benefits in having them.

I have been using Continental contact winter tyres, I may change to the Michelin cross climate next time after watching this.

I've noticed that when it's wet out the hydraulic brakes occasionally don't feel so great. I suspect that they are getting water or other crud on them, and because the hydraulic brakes are used so infrequently on the Taycan, there's not much of a chance to heat up the brakes and burn that stuff off.

Thanks for the replies, I have noticed this a few times at different speeds, but as W1NGE says mostly at lower speeds.

I have had it on a couple of occasions where I have been approaching traffic lights and it is one of those where the lights turn and you are almost committed but not quite, so you firmly apply brakes and not much happens so you have to go that much harder quick to stop before the line and have ended up skidding, looking like a bit of a plank as their are inevitably lots of people about.

Am sure this is a combination of the weight and also the second that you lose when the thing doesn't slow down as you expect initially. When I drive the wife's Range Rover I almost put her through the windscreen the first couple of times I brake.

Is definitely one that keeps you on your toes.

Looking at the wheels, assume that is 21" to 20" ? Was recalibration needed at all?

Can you get them for the Taycan though? I had a quick look on their site and didn't seem to be an option. Had the same with the iPace, would have gone for Cross Climate or the Goodyear Vectors (and on that car would be fine for all year) but not an option on my wheels.

I hadn't looked yet.
I have placed an order for winter wheels and tyres with the dealer and was assuming what Porsche specify will be optimum for the car, but giver it doesn't snow often here and wet braking is my biggest concern looks like "all season" is best overall here for typical UK winters.

I will have to look into it!

The Continental winter contacts I have on my current car are exactly the same size as my summer tyres so easy.

Actually my Panamera was exactly the same but my Boxster is 'normal' - quirk of certain Porsche's perhaps!

Yeah is a 21" to a 20", when you first drive the car after the change is comes up with a warning on the dash saying 'Tyre change detected make selection". You then need to re-calibrate, it gives you a selection of wheel/tyre types to choose from, 21" Summer, 20" Winter etc. so is pretty specific, on previous cars it has just asked for a calibration rather than asking specifically what you have put on.

Not certain that 19 inch will fit if you have a turbo CT. check with the dealer since this was not an option on early cars

We run a fleet of lorries at work and have our own mechanics to maintain them, got the tyres delivered from a Porsche dealer and one of the mechanics fitted them for me and also a pair on a Turbo S CT.

They would have just swapped the wheels over and not done anything 'special', just had to do the calibration on both cars.

You can easily do this yourself if you have a good way of safely lifting the car. And get some of these guide pins to easily slip off the 21 inch wheeLe and slip on the 20 inch. They cost about 10 Euro each. Makes a huge difference and helps not to damage the rims or get any scratches On them.

Ah good point, yes there aren’t any Winter tyre 19” options in the configurator for the Turbo but assumed it was simply them not expecting any down-selling…after all its there to make you spend at least 30% over budget….?
