I think it’s ridiculous (my opinion - this is an “op-ed” after all) for anyone to “optimize” their build by excluding the $460 400V/150kW charging option - which has the potential to save one _ACTUAL_ personal time if they encounter or use a 400V > 50kW charger during their ownership - I understand this is a potentially “rare” encounter (less so if you consider Tesla Supercharger access which has already started becoming reality) - but still - let’s review the options Porsche will charge you more money than this very functional and very useful personal time saving option…(yes this option may in fact save you personal ACTUAL honest to goddness time while you charge your Taycan in some random parking lot - actually as much as 1 hour _LESS_ time spent waiting for your Taycan to reach 90%)
  • _ANY_ color choice - $800 or more
  • _ANY_ wheel choice - $1200 or more
  • _ANY_ interior choice - $4130 or more
  • _ANY_ seat choice - $1500 or more
  • Deviated stitching - $5100
  • Sports design carbon fibre - $9500
  • Sports design package - $5600
  • etc…sports design anything - moving on
  • gloss black mirror base - $600
  • painting your keys to match the car color - $500 or more…
  • Mirrors in carbon fibre - $1400
  • Bespoke Decal set - $1350
  • Porsche sports electric sound - $500
  • sports chrono package - $1320
    • PCCB’s are un-necessary on this car for any reason and yet people (myself included) spend $6000++
    • all other performance options get a “pass“ because they are actually functional in nature and signficant mechanical change
  • _ANY_ change to headlights - $1500 or more
  • Light Strip with Porsche Logo in black - $950
  • Glass roof - $1300
  • HUD - $1600
  • Surround View - $1200
  • Lane Change Assist - $950
  • rear 2+1 seat - $480
  • _ANY_ seat belt change - $660
  • _ANY_ interior accent change - $650 or more
  • _ANY_ thing in the “Leather” section for options
  • _ANY_ thing in the Racetex section for options
    • honestly - Racetex floor mats are more expensive than this option - FLOOR MATS!!
  • Carbon Fibre anything!!
  • Most of the Aluminum options
  • audio and communication - yep all more expensive
  • Anything in e-Mobility (except range manager)
    • honestly this option is Cheaper than the the BOX to hold your charger!! $470 for a decorative BOX
  • any delivery experience…$500 or more…
honestly you’re hard pressed to find a cheaper item on the list - and many much more expensive options are far less potentially beneficial or functional.

check the box and move on IMHO - this is _NOT_ where you’re going to save money on a Porsche build…vs. other options in context

in the vein of “eat this, not that”…

here is a options swap that is cost neutral ($40 savings actually) - and if wrong can be fixed after the build…one can be retrofitted, the other can’t…

if you _MUST_ save money on a build - here is what to do…
  • uncheck the “sports sound button” - $500
  • check the hardware upgrade which porsche does not let you retrofit (unlike the sports sound) which saves me time in a sketchy parking lot in the middle of nowhere at night when I’m away from home option - 400V/150kW charger for $460 - (you still save $40 on your $173,970 Taycan GTS build)
I promise you, the 400V/150kW charger will see more use and benefit vs. the Sports Sound…

100% agree. Sports sound is a gimmick. First time I heard it during a test drive I didn't care for it. Not worth $500. I did spec the 400V charging option on my RWD.

It's interesting how polarizing the Sports Sound is. I have it and rarely use it except as a pedestrian warning, but it seems that for every person who thinks it's a pointless gimmick there's someone else who considers it a must have. Take a look at this review from the Remove Before Race YT channel (which is excellent, BTW, and has a lot of great content on Taycans) as the presenter was picking up his personal 4S CT. I skipped to the salient part:

I agree - but if you decide later you miss the sports sound you can add it via a dealer service visit - but you can’t add the 400V/150kW charger - and if you could I’m willing to bet it would be way way more than $460…after delivery.

I agree that the 150kW charger is a must have (and arguably should just be standard). I have it too, although it's only come in handy maybe once. I was simply commenting on Sports Sound, not arguing it in favor of 150kW charging!

I think a lot of reviewers who drive the car like the sport sound.

Press the button... 'ooh that's cool... I'll say about it in my write up as its something different' to mention.

Its always an issue with reviewers as opposed to owners giving advice. They have it a day, blast round in it, then hand it back.

Another one has been the Alfa QF. I was thinking of getting one. The reviewers love them to bits....but then I went onto the forums and found people loved the car, but when it goes wrong the dealers are hopeless and you can't even get spares for them and you end up driving round in a Fiat courtesy car for months on end. Then they sell them and buy an M4.

Sorry.... Back on topic....

Yes always spec the 150kw charger. ?

Disagree. I use Sport Sound every single day. I have yet to use the 400v/150kW charger, and I've tried.
I used my 400V/150 kW charger for a track day in Oct. @ Laguna Seca - I was able to charge at 75 kW at the near by Monterey Airport ChargePoint FastDC chargers - published charge rate 62 kW - actual observed rate 68-75 kW - definately 400V chargers - if I’d not had the upgrade it would’ve been capped at 50 kW…

and then we’ll eventually have Tesla Superchargers with CCS adapters so that will also increase the chances of this feature being used.

I've never even needed DCFC at all. I've used it a few times, just to see what it's like and to make sure it works. But so far, 100% of my charging can be done using L2 chargers, either at home or at my destination.

I like the sport sound. It's silly and goofy. Definite little-kid energy (as today's little kids might say). But if the Taycan doesn't make you feel like a little kid, IMO, you're doing it wrong.

Strongly disagree.

I think it’s ridiculous (my opinion - as a response to your opinion, which you’ve opened yourself up to by posting yours publicly) to tell people which options they must have on their car or how to prioritize their options. At least that strongly.

I have exactly zero plans to charge the car anywhere other than home. So how exactly is this charger going to save me time?

Further, almost any option could be viewed as having a small influence on the overall price. But they all aggregate. And there’s a lot of them. So, the whole “that one option doesn’t cost that much” line is really, really flawed reasoning.

I’m not arguing that no one should get it. I am arguing that it’s not a magic everyone should get it, obviously needed, better than anything else option.

I still wouldn’t get it if I was spec’ing the car today.

wow great - i’m not that limited in my demands of my vehicles - fast charging 2-5 times a month and i can go anywhere

awfully limited use case for a 150k car /but ok you do you - guess porsche could leave off the entire fast dc mechanism then

but i agree you can leave this option off of you never ever in a million years plan to drive further than 250 miles with out making an 11 hour charging stop - or potentially a 90 min stop that could’ve been less than 30 min with this feature - porsche’s public spec for charging the taycan at 9.6 kw

but you might want to consider this if 11 hour stops isn’t your thing
