I've had nails and screws in tires before, but never one like this where it appears to have barely punctured the tire below the surface of the shoulder and is visible as a lump just under the sidewall. No noticeable decrease in air pressure yet, but definitely a problem!

I have an appointment to take it in on Tuesday to repair or replace it and I'm guessing it will need to be replaced.

Anyone ever had a puncture similar to this?

I think that tire is toast. If it had penetrated the tread it may have been repairable. I've gotten two nails so far but they were in the tread and repairable.

These tires aren't supposed to be plugged or patched anyways per Porsche. A Y rated tire on a 5000lb car needs to be replaced.........
This was my deciding factor for buying the wheel and tire insurance.

Too close to the edge of the tyre to repair. generally needs to be at least a couple of inches from sidewall of the tyre. That said, it does look like it's only just under the skin!

Porsche have always said no repairs to me in both 911 and Panamera. My view with them at least, is they want to sell you a new tyre at the wrong price. Tyre shop thought no issues with fixing them, and given i was never going to race them etc, where stresses are much higher i agreed.
Porsche also wanted to only sell/replace them in pairs too - otherwise one could be a bit smaller than the other. Maybe i'm just cynical, but my view was that was a load of tosh too.

By all means.... it is your car afterall.
I just know heading down the road at 115mph I wouldn't be able concentrate knowing that.
I don't think Porsche make or breaks their business by trying to sell people more tires.

You can patch a tire and lose a speed rating. It’s not a big deal and the tiremakers allow it. A Porsche dealer won’t patch a tire for you, but a tire shop will.

With that being said, this particular damage can’t be repaired. As others have noted, it’s too close to the sidewall.

Regarding wheel and tire insurance, anything that you buy sitting in the “box” (that’s what the call the place that they sit you when finalizing the deal for the car) is a waste of money.

You can repair a lot of wheels and tires for what you’re paying in there. If you don’t know a good wheel repair shop, find one. It’s a handy thing and will save you a lot of money.

A good tire shop can shave a new tire for you if the sizes are substantially different due to wear.

True, but tyre shops do have a business model that is tyre focused! They did think it's within tolerance for those tyres. The fact porsche wanted to change 2 tyres for 1 with a puncture very much sent the BS alarm ringing, so rightly or wrongly it impacted my opinion on their tyre advice generally..

Anyway, Taycan a different animal and heavy i know, so may well be different.

Which roads in Sacremento can you do 115mph on btw? :)

I didn't know that was even a thing - or a concern!
It can be more of a concern with traditional ICE AWD systems. If the sizes are that far off where it’s a problem, you’re probably close to the need to replace the other tire(s) anyway.

I have a good wheel repair shop already..... and have used them many times.
That being said....... buying the wheel and tire insurance, paintless dent repair, and key replacement for $1800 (their cost) for 6 years when I'm planning on keeping the car was a no brainer.
If you wanna patch your Y rated electric tires for your 5000lb car..... by all means go right ahead.
In this case by the sidewall, youd be about 1/4 of the way to paying for the insurance already......

Since I'm anticipating needing to replace the tire (really disappointing as I only have 5500 miles on the car so far and hit my 1 year purchase anniversary next week...), I've been looking online to see who carries this exact tire (Pirelli Cinturato P7 Blue 285/40R20 108Y XL) and other similar tires that could be used as a replacement.

The closest tire shop to me is a tried and true Discount Tire that I've used for several vehicles in the past, but checking online they don't seem to carry this tire and other Pirelli's that fit show out of stock. I suspect they can order any given tire, but I did find them on Tirerack.com.

What tires would you recommend for the Taycan given I live in Central Texas and am generally only concerned with the heat in the summer and wouldn't bother trying to drive it when we have our annual few days of ice and freezing weather?

I think you should want to match all of your tyres - i.e. not have a different brand or version on different corners of the car.
