As my "garage" (chalet is more closer:CWL:) is almost ready,
Porsche Taycan Car fire blanket for garage 20220623_164913

I'm wondering if I should have a car fire blanket ready to be used,

What's your opinion/experience?

Cheers

My “garage” is similar to yours… maybe even more open from left/right sides….and I’ve never had any problem during winter times, temperatures down to -15C.

edit: looks that i haven’t underdstood your question….but still, my garage is similar (and larger), there are two cars, one tractor and storage for wood (for fireplace in the house)…also, I live in a log house (honka), about 10m away, and i’m not affraid of a fire at all.

Doubt a fire blanket would do much unfortunately - if the HV battery catches then good night Vienna (Felicity Ace incident) given it will fuel the fire.

From my experience as a voluntary firefighter if you remove the oxygen then the fire will "run" out of oxidizer ==> extinction

My daughter's bedroom is right on the other side of a concrete block wall from my car in the garage. I'm sometimes concerned about what would happen if the car caught fire.

I had originally specced the OEM fire extinguisher in my CT4, but after a bit of research I realized that it would be of little use for an HV battery fire.

@TIM, if you still have access to firefighting resources, I think you will find that BEV fires are notoriously hard to extinguish. See here for example.

A fire blanket might help contain the fire while emergency services are on the way, but it’s unlikely to be capable of extinguishing.

I gather that an increasingly common practice by firefighters is to remove the vehicle after extinguishing and completely submerge the entire thing in water for multiple days to ensure reignition does not occur.

The lithium-ion battery or Li-ion battery fire does not need any oxygen to burn at all, because it can do that without any oxygen at all. The nature of the fire is recognized as completely chemical, so there is no role of oxygen in it that can start this fire.
lithium battery fire + fire blanket = bigger fire?

There is no way you're stopping a fire in the HV battery in these cars. The correct strategy is to make sure that you're aware of it quickly (i.e., have a fire alarm in the garage) and have an escape route out of the house in the opposite direction if it does catch on fire. And make sure that you have fire break doors in place anywhere there is direct entry between the house and the garage.

No, you are wrong.
You have to know that batteries do not “produce” flames, just heat only….and that enormous heat then fires material in surrounding. That’s why firefighters can only (try to) save other cars (or building), trying to prevent that the heat of the battery expands.

Li-ion batteries burn even under water. I'm no expert but the potential is quite scary as Felicity Ace disaster earlier this year brought home to many of us.

They can “burn” because it’s not a fire, but a chemical process (that produce heat).

If you have a fire blanket, are you going to cover the car each time it's parked. Once a fire starts you are not going to be able to get close enough to cover the whole car with a fire blanket, because of the heat. . If you cover the car while parked, it will most likely induce a fire, due to the car not be able o cool off the battery while charging or preheat/cool .

What do you do with your phone, iPad, laptop, etc, while charging? I had a laptop battery expand once, bent the laptop case. Thankfully no fire. There's a lot of things in a house that can catch fire.

The electrolyte in a lithium ion battery is flammable and can/does actually burn like any other fire.
