I don't have off street parking as i live in London(!) and so i'll be using street charges, the shell EV and others.

However, i want to have the option of an emergency charge at home.

The council don't recommend it but IF i had to i want to get a cable ramp for the small section of pavement to keep pedestrians safe much like when i wash my car the prams just go over the hose pipe!

Does anyone have any recommendations on what might be suitable ? Thanks

We use ramps similar to the below pic at work for temporary wiring.

I think you just need to find one with the right cable diameter and length (or connect several) for your use case.

Several on Amazon for about £25 for 900mm length. I see several of these in use near my daughters flat in Ealing ?

I think it's notionally against the law (obstructing he pavement or whatever), bu plenty of people use them around us. I don't see what the problem is and I've not heard of enforcement. That said, a few people just use uncovered extension cables and that is asking for trouble and a bit out of order.

This is the sort of thing i've seen people using:

Yes i think it's important to have this for emergencies if your car didn't start etc so want to do in a safe manner.

I don't plan to do this regularly as it's frowned upon!

I was looking at something like this:

Looks good. I think the main thing is a wheel chair/mobility scooter can get over it without a huge drama.

I think you can also request the council to get a charger is put in a nearby lamp post. No idea how and you'll obviously need to pay a commercial rate.

Same, no off road parking. I charge at Porsche mainly but Shell is going mad round here and there's 2 stations within 10 mins with 4 175kw chargers just added. So there's no need to home charge if you don't have a proper charger. A full charge will last 2-3 weeks unless you drive every day a good few miles. It took about 1000 miles for my battery to condition (and winter didn't help) so you will be charging more frequently at the beginning, don't lose heart. It gets much better. I don't do the cable pavement thing though I could as you get the 3 pin plug supplied. Just don't see the point charging a 3kw. It would take 24+ hours to charge. And I do not want some punk chucking the ramp in the front garden and some old lady tripping over the cable and suing the arsehole with the red Taycan. Watch out for pavement warriors and neighbours grassing to the council. Just don't see the point for 3kw and as I am sure you have read on this forum everyone charges at 20-25%. You just won't be at 1% outside your house ever.

yes you are right - i just wanted for an emergency to ensure that it is charged safely. I will probably never use this though in practice!!

Something my chargepoint installer posted on social media. Haven't used this myself but might be worth looking into.

I think with the way people park on the footpath (I'm not in London) and completely block it for prams etc, I wouldnt be concerned about buying a decent cable cover and occasionally charging the car.

The Dibble seem to ignore all the pavement parkers here, even when it forces prams etc to walk out into a busy road.

Just came across this on the Tesla forum...

Looks like a neat solution.

if all cars are electric then there won’t be enough chargers to service all the cars with the average charge time needed. This will have to come in with faster charging in all lamp posts too.

A good long term resi solution would be:

- 11kW/22kW in each lamp post along the street.
- a pair of 50 KW faster chargers at the end of each street.

The takes care of "overnight" charging and a quick 30/60 minute charge if you're in more urgent need.

Question is who pays for it all.
