Day 10: Stelvio Pass [Driving Day]

Screenshot 2022-09-05 at 07.35.57.jpg

Today we have a long full day of driving over the amazing mountain passes and valleys in The Dolomites.

After a decent breakfast we check out this 3D relief mapping table at our hotel.

52334253412_ff96ebd909_o.jpg

Was very neat being able to get a sense our planned route in this way.

52335208731_0a8a556dbd_o.jpg

We walk out to a fully charged car – this is one of those days where getting a reliable destination charge makes everything easier.

We start the day by heading back down south to Bolzano – where the steep walls of the valley are close to the road – making for a dramatic driving experience.

52335214161_15321467a0_o.jpg

Which is very well represented by the 3D Satellite view in our Passenger Display.

52335453953_68c312ed7d_o.jpg

You'll notice the -42% battery level being shown on the display – this was one of those days where we wanted to fully control the charging and switched off Porsche Charging Planner option. At the time this photo was taken – we hadn't manually added our planned charging stop – but would do later on in the day.

The reason for turning off the option is that this was one of those rare day's where we wouldn't have an IONITY station option and didn't want the car picking some random charger.

As we reached Bolzano – traffic was building up – but thankfully the PCM navigation routed us around it very effectively – and actually pointed us in the direction of our first climb of the day – Mendelpass passo Mendola.

52335222236_ea335858d8_o.jpg

And we're almost immediately into the coveted twisty stuff.

52335522899_a8a3061438_o.jpg

We knew we were starting off with a good one – because the route was packed with motorbikes and cyclists – and they know which ones to choose!

52335226016_8c4094fc9c_o.jpg

Reaching the town of Ruffré-Mendola at the top of the pass – where we consider stopping for food – but its a little too early in our day for that just yet.

52335227201_8e1a7c38d1_o.jpg

We continue down the other side of the pass – passing through quaint cobblestone'd towns.

52335469948_9dbc2b6218_o.jpg

And endless kilometers of apple orchards.

52335231816_46be7e4b6b_o.jpg

With their ordered rows of trees reaching right up to our road.

52335662340_e0f9faec5f_o.jpg

Many of the towns we pass do not have a lot going on this warm Sunday.

52335234686_b0de022a87_o.jpg

Heading for passo Tonale.

52335665810_468831d349_o.jpg

And climbing up.

52334281762_7d7f899d42_o.jpg

To some great views from the road.

52335666395_3965ac5408_o.jpg

We climb up the 1883 meters to the top of Passo di Tonale – where we pull into a pizza restaurant for some lunch.

52335239996_1c8a43a718_o.jpg

This place is popular with bikers – where we park next to a group all the way from Norway.

52335480258_66deaaebd7_o.jpg

A messed up ordering in Italian resulted in the strangest pizza we've ever seen – one with french fries on top – what-the-heck – ah well, we need to roll with it!

52335541504_486bd9cceb_o.jpg

At this stage we were at 57% battery and were close to our planned charging stop of the day which was only a few kilometers away.

We follow the ski cable cars down the pass.

52335544699_7de79ee606_o.jpg

And pull into the 100 kW DC charger – that happens to have a rare Taycan charging on it. Thankfully they are just finishing and we plug in for a ten minute top up.

52334293527_b19dd2ab73_o.jpg

We started the charger – as planned – with our EnelX RFID card – which we had pre-ordered due to @McgR's helpful report earlier in the month. We had just started when a Tesla Model 3 started to queue – so this is a busy little charging station at Pointe di Legno.

We continue our day navigating mountain passes – with the next big one being Passo Del Mortirolo.

Where the cows have bells.

52335255321_293700f3e3_o.jpg

And the roads are narrow.

52335256501_488be12be0_o.jpg

And very enjoyable.

52335497458_56c75dee47_o.jpg

This cyclist overtook us at 80km an hour – must feel great after such a tough climb on the way up!

52335499178_3200c78a09_o.jpg

Eventually reaching the big one – the highlight of our day – Passo Stelvio.

52335262301_18b6c4d989_o.jpg

It's close to 17:00 in the evening and the road is quiet except for the bikers – there is no motorhome/RV in front of us – lets go for it!

52335693405_b5336d7b01_o.jpg

The car climbs beautifully – with the rear-wheel steering and PDCC working hard on the steep turns.

52335564079_3f2fa3259f_o.jpg

We easily keep up with motorbikes and in some instances overtake them.

52335506903_89c77242aa_o.jpg

Climbing up and up.

52335697410_b34d11a72d_o.jpg

Until we reach the plateau near the top.

52334313642_e7588b86db_o.jpg

Nearly there – feeling relaxed.

52335567809_0f5fd9586e_o.jpg

Made it!

52335568479_ddc9212355_o.jpg

2744 meters – the highest we've been with our Taycan.

52335701070_77c724f473_o.jpg

With 42% in our battery – the PCM is estimating we'll arrive back at our hotel with 21% – and our hotel is close to 180 km away!

That is remarkable.

It really helped us appreciate – with the regenerative capabilities of the Taycan – being at altitude is a form of stored energy.

52335514408_2d88bc121f_o.jpg

It's time to head back down and harvest it on the steep inclines.

52335275881_291ed81d60_o.jpg

52335706360_f4a4c29774_o.jpg

Passing by the Forst brewery on the way back to our hotel – the tasty beer we've been enjoying in this region.

52334349102_b6c17560b7_o.jpg

Finally arriving back to our hotel just in time for dinner – and a reliable destination charge. The chargers here must be load-balanced – as there are less cars charging today and we immediately got the full 22 kW – rather than the 7 kW yesterday.

52334324377_c4927eac89_o.jpg

And did the PCM do a good guess at the top of the Stelvio at what our arrival state of charge would be? Of course it did – as always!

52335520863_d8e2f5422c_o.jpg

Time for a drink – what a day!

Lovely part of Italy! I’ll be riding the Stelvio and Mortirolo in a couple of weekends ?

Why did you get the EnelX RFID card? We just used the Porsche card and it worked fine (And was cheap!)?

@McgR reported that the Porsche RFID card did not start a EnelX charger a few weeks ago. It also did not start the charger for me yesterday- I tried the Porsche Card first so used the EnelX card as a backup. Sounds like some teething problems.

Thank you for the useful information. We had a "flexiplus" ticket type which seems to give a lot of freedom when you get to the terminal.

When we were getting some food in the Flexplus Lounge we noticed that there was a notice on the screens telling drivers with "Tesla's" to pick the "large" lane. We didn't know why for sure but though it might have something to do with EV's being larger in general.

So when we drove out of the lounge we also picked the large lane – with flexiplus – you can make that choice yourself – as you are not strictly allocated a lane.

Until now we hadn't appreciated that was a good decision to make. As we're going back via the tunnel – we'll know now to repeat it!

We just assumed that the double-level carriages were not as high but the same width!

Thanks for the useful info too. I never do Flexiplus, so I'm not familiar with the boarding process. That's a useful insight though if I ever do it.

Yeah, because the structure of the double-deck carriages is load-bearing (the side walls have to support the upper deck and up to five vehicles also), they have to be extra strong, and therefore extra thick. The "channel" you drive down is quite narrow indeed, and it also has the metal lips just waiting to scrape your alloys. Not only that, they're much more awkward to drive into (both the lower and upper deck). Anything of 5 Series size or above, and you'll be looking at damaged rims. No way would I drive a Taycan into there.

I'm following this thread every day. Let us know how you get on at Calais.

Day 11: Bressanone (Italy) -> Andermatt (Switzerland)

We've got a "transit" day today as we make our way from Italy to Switzerland – though we plan to end the day with a mountain pass – rather than motorway.

Again, it's nice to start the day off with a full destination charge – although there is an IONITY station fairly near the start of our route today if we hadn't.

To get views like this at night.

Your hotel has to be reasonable remote and therefore we start today driving down to the nearby town.

Using our Bip & Go telepass to enter the motorway.

Although we are on a motorway – it is still very scenic as it winds through the steep valley's of this part of Italy.

Before long we're at the border with Austria. How many times have we crossed into Austria on this road-trip ?

With many tunnels cutting into the mountain.

Inside of one is a trailer full of not-new looking Taycan's.

We experience more "open sided" tunnels in Austria than we have for a while.

We stop for ten minutes for a comfort break and our only charging station today – we are confident of getting a destination charge at our hotel. Neptune Blue still looking good in the warm weather.

In the town of Feldkirch – we bump into the border with Liechtenstein – a tiny German speaking microstate.

Switzerland is one country that you'd want to pay heed to the PCM country speed limit info on crossing the border.

If useful to anyone to gauge Eurotunnel width - that’s what it looks like:

Audi A5 - obviously I wasn’t centered on the lane but basically OK to navigate narrow double decks

BMW X5 - nightmare. I did it once, had to try and mount the little metal curb 10 times off boarding as they have “S shaped” chicanes where toilets / stairs, otherwise it’d have been right on the alloys.

This is the opportunity to thank Tigerbalm for his amazing write ups (which I keep annoying my wife with), I’m sure a few of us got totally inspired and have planned / are planning road-trips because of your touring adventures.
One question - have you not been tempted to either buy or rent a GT car such as a DB9/11, AMG GT, FF etc. for some of those trips? Were you doing similar stuff with the Panamera or did it become a thing alongside EV ownership?

Ssssh, tell no one @B61 but my co-driver carried some tasty Union Beer into Switzerland!

I hope I can find some of this stuff back in Dublin.

:oops::oops::oops:
When I saw your previous photo with this beer, my first thought was:  :surprised:
after smelly room at Bled, just another bad experience?
you see, i’m a beer person…you are coming from the land of Kilkenny (on my list of top three beers), ending the day with union lager?
it’s a pitty that you havent’ found any beer from local, small breweries.
Hopefuly next time:like:

of course, taste is personal (like selecting colours of Taycan :giggle:) and i prefer pale ale and ipa over lager.

Anyway: i’m glad if you like it.
(btw: our both largest breweries have been aquired by Heineken few years ago).

It's an EV thing really.

I answer this a little on our previous Arctic Circle trip:

https://www.taycanforum.com/forum/t...arctic-circle-road-trip-2022.9393/post-135853

We would have done trips like this with the Panamera but pandemic lockdown's started a month after we took delivery and we ended up trading it in for the Taycan before it ended! In fact, technically we collected our Taycan under "click & collect" rules in Ireland at the time.

Its not an interest in EVs from an environmental perspective – the interest lies more in the "challenge" of them. But since owning we appreciate the positive environmental aspects more and more.

Driving through the arctic region emitting little local pollution is amazing. Or driving down a steep road in the alps – recovering some of the energy used going up there in the first place – is equally impressive. A modern ICE car might use little fuel going down the same road – but it ain't making petrol!

The software engineering in us (my wife and I met in university studying software) – enjoys the technical aspects of EV ownership – the kilowatts and volts, etc.

I think this road-trip is showing that the infrastructure in this part of Europe is now at a stage where it really isn't as challenging as one might think.

We've got an epic one planned for winter though – watch out for that!

Regarding other nice ICE cars – like Aston Martin's, AMG GT's, etc – there isn't much of a culture of ownership of those kind of cars in Ireland – the tax on them is so high – 64%:

https://www.taycanforum.com/forum/threads/tax-credits-globally.12234/post-181079

It makes them unaffordable – or at least painful to lose that much money to tax – meaning there isn't a single Aston Martin or Ferrari dealership in the country. There are dealers "on the island" in Northern Ireland but with Brexit – making things a bit more complex or expensive than it used to. It's not impossible to do here – but it takes effort.

So when a nice performance EV comes along – in Ireland – it makes more sense than it can do in other countries – hence why we have it (and the Panamera Turbo S attracted similar cost advantages as it was a hybrid – but they are about to run out).
