No my point is that no inanimate object has soul. It’s just a dopey romanticism people see to have to make themselves feel cool and discerning, like they’re the Lou Reed of generic sports car owners.

That said, if one talks about the feel of real connection with the road, that ship sailed a couple decades ago.

The real comedy in this thread is the fact that the vehicle that gave OP the feels was a Macan…

No. I'm never going back to ICE.
Yeah, I was placing a Ferrari order before pulling trigger on my Taycan. No matter how cool the Ferrari looked and sounded, it still felt like yesterday.

The only ICE I would consider is something like a Singer (imagine a Singer 930, https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a39017129/singer-porsche-911-turbo-930/ or really just any Singer) or something like a Miura or Pantera..

Or even my old car back, a Green 67 Firebird Convertible.

Each of these cars are still awesome now, and I think they were likely mind-blowing when they were introduced. The hood mounted tach on my Firebird was useless but cool. Mine had factory a/c, power top, power brakes, padded dash, and it looked modern. It drove "ok", but all of those cars honestly handled like crap compared to ours. I also owned a 64 1/2 mustang and it seemed ancient (and it was the worst car I have ever owned even though it was in mint condition).

I'm holding out for an electric 911 Targa.
I think you’ll be holding out for a while if you’re waiting on Porsche.

I’m looking forward to a manual cab.

here we go again.. if you scoll back far enough people were complaining about the same lack of soul loss going from a horse to ICE :p

I miss bumping up and down on my horse and smelling horse poop.. actually i dont miss the noise and even more the smell of an ICE car! once you go EV you see how loud and dirty (and slooooow!) ICE is. Welcome to the future, today :)

It would have to be a 911 gt3 touring for me to make the switch.

and no, not bored of EVs.

The soul of Porsche comes from the brand's legacy. The founder, the engineers, the time and attention that went into what you and I get into every day to go to work or run errands around town.
Let's not take the hard work that went into making any car for granted.

Every time I get behind the wheel, I think about how this (me getting into a Porsche, and going about my daily routine) is possible by an inextricable chain of events.

So, is this dopey romanticism or an expression of gratitude and appreciation?

Ewww no, ICE cars are such an obsolete technology...

Whenever I have to drive one it feels so antiquated, so clunky.

The simple fact that you are burning fuel to make that thing move is so ridiculous and inneficient when you think about it.

Idk what’s everyone’s problem with the Macan. Don’t be so toxic, it’s really not bad. I owned anywhere from Lexus to Maserati to Audi to Tesla, the Macan is by no means an incompetent vehicle. Also we are people, we romanticize thing. You do it too, maybe not with cars but with other things. If you don’t romanticize anything, you’re a robot. Are you a robot? I didn’t think Porsche owners are this mean… but I guess there are all kinds of people who own all kinds of cars

people can be so close minded… just because the future is EV, doesn’t mean it’s not worth looking back at the heritage. Also for those wondering, I also ride horses too.

The secret to happiness is to stop caring what others think about what you like. People who denigrate others tend to be unhappy or insecure, and I’m, personally, too lazy to care.

I also find that nobody who really loves something is snobby about it. One of my many vices is wine, which is one of the few things in life for which there is absolutely no downside to promiscuity. I’ve been fortunate enough to have enjoyed thousands of wines, including many that the “experts” consider to be the best. But I’ve learned that the sole thing that matters is if the wine in your glass is making you happy at that particular moment. It’s even better if it happens to be two-buck chuck. Good for you. You win.

Same with cars. I love driving. Yeah, I love the nice cars but I also loved our Toyota Sienna minivan, and I will tell you that misbehaving in that minivan was so much more fun than misbehaving in a Porsche. If I am drifting in a Porsche, I’m just another @hole but if I’m drifting in the minivan, I’m crazy, and it’s a lot more fun to be crazy.

I also like Bad Bunny, Rufus du Sol and Taylor Swift, so sue me.

Great example! Snobs would say that white chocolate isn’t chocolate, but if you like it, who cares?

White Zinfandel with Kenny G?

I wouldn't go as far as insinuating cars can have "souls" (I'm not even entirely clear what it _is_), but I've made up my mind long ago that my 911 (plain-vanilla, nothing-special, manual 996C2) will never leave my possession. It's going to check all the "engagement" boxes for me - sound, steering and driving feel, the need to tinker or otherwise "work" on it and so on. It'll get driven, rain or shine, and it'll be both an event and a familiar act - like going for a walk with the dog/putting on your favorite shoes - every time. Some threads here got me worried that the Taycan (which I haven't sampled yet) will make the Elf obsolete, but then I realized that my connection with this car isn't about its power, speed or skidpad traction; it's about the shape lurking in the dark garage, the click of the door handle, the minimalistic interior and the mini-ritual of starting it. It's also about the trips, and that rare moment when driving is just bliss. (I'll gloss over the tire and wind noise, the eating through rear tires, its infuriating habit of "forgetting" keys, and the swearing that ensues when I have to work on it.) So I get what the OP is talking about.

The Macan, though, is not .. that. It's a very competent vehicle, very comfortable, quite fast and handles better than - well, let's say I have no reason to expect more from a tall SUVish weighing >4k lbs. It takes me up into the mountains in the worst snowstorm, has plenty of room for the dog or a HD run. (I'll pause to note the 911 doesn't do any of those things - okay, maybe the handling bit.) I'm not as connected with it, though, and I doubt I'll miss it (not related, but there was plenty of swearing while working on this one too).

The Taycan will assume the workhorse duty - the dog/ski/HD runs, in addition to daily driving. I liked @Stoneageman original post, and found it to be hope-giving: it's not that we can't connect with EVs (hold your jokes about PCM), but connecting with one shouldn't necessarily imply (or mean) moving on from lesser-capable ICEs. It's happened too frequently even on this forum, and - the saddest part for me - even to long-time gearheads I know personally. (Think I'll drive the Elf tomorrow, rain be damned.)

I switched to EV with Tesla Model 3 and Model X. Then after about 4 years of ownership, I switched to the Taycan and the Etron. While both are amazing EVs to drive, I was given a Macan loaner for when my Taycan was in service, and I had so much fun with the SUV because of the engine/transmission characteristics. Taycan is undoubtedly faster than the Macan, but the sound of that engine roaring and you feel the transmission upshifting made it feel fast. I miss the little things like when you feel the down shift, or when you can pop it into manual, or even the fact that the car's transmission is nowhere near as smooth as EV. If it wasn't for the insane gas prices, I think I would rather go back to petrol and just get a 911.

Don't get me wrong, I still love my Taycan and for an EV, it is arguably the best to drive. Though, sometimes I just miss the crackles and pops of an engine.
It is the inability of an IC engine to develop power over a wide speed range which makes an electric motor superior for a vehicle, needing neither clutch nor multi ratio gearbox to compensate for the substantial shortcomings in delivery of IC engines. Feeling any superiority from the shortcomings to which we have all become accustomed is making a virtue out of necessity.
An electric motor is also simpler, quieter and has less vibration.

Having written that as an old bloke who spent a career designing and running Formula 1 cars I see the occasional attraction of a noisy, inconvenient but fun thrash through the countryside in a screaming high revving sports car with 3 pedals and 6-speed manual gear lever.

It is the difference between being able to overtake on the rare occasion around here that a short bit of straight road has nothing coming the other way and being too late by the time I have changed down into the appropriate gear which is, for me, the biggest gain of an EV.

I shan't be selling my sports car but I hardly ever use it. It is fun in Scotland, but a penance on the first 300 miles driving there, so I don't any more.

On top of that most, if not all, current IC engined cars have flappy paddle automatic gearboxes and stability control so effective the only thing it can't save you from is entering a corner far too quickly, which means there is zero satisfaction for the driving skill necessary to get the best out of them because there isn't any. So you have to run an old one for the real IC engine thrilling experience :)
