This has been a total "nonissue" for me. i have the PB+ and the charger that came at no extra cost with the vehicle. I manually changed the setting from 100% to 50% and charge at night. The charging begins at midnight and I have 85% charge by 9AM (I don't need the car any sooner than that). I usually charge when the battery reaches 20-25% remaining.

I did notice that the outlet had minor damage from the heat so I am glad I caught it in time.

I wonder how the guy is doing that is trying to organize the class action lawsuit.
you should upgrade your socket to a Hubble outlet - and heat damage it not a good sign - but you can make your own decisions.

See my post above. I am in San Diego and the 40 amp charging rate started to melt my outlet. I suggest you check yours from time to time. We don't need any more Taycans catching fire.
do You have picture where it melt? thanks

reliable and well designed EVSE will not melt/discolor/fold/spindle/mutilate the NEMA socket they are plugged into - if you're NEMA socket has suffered distress it means the male plug inserted into your female socket has gotten warm enough to melt the plastic - again well designed EVSE's won't get warm enough to make this an issue…

if your plug is melting the solution is not to turn down the amps - the solution is:
  1. replace the damaged socket - it's now compromised and should be replaced - follow Porsche's own advice and other EV vendors - and get the Hubble commerical/industrial quality socket
  2. purchase an alternative EVSE that doesn't overheat - thereby removing this vector from your threat matrix…
  3. if it overheated once, that was just it first attempt, it will try again, it will do it again, and next it might finish the job and burn down your house - a quality alternative is available that doesn't have this failure mode…
demand better.

well I am embarrassed to say that maybe I over-reacted and definitely exaggerated this issue. When I first pulled the plug to examine it after hearing about the issue, I noticed discoloration. Now the discoloration seems more uniform, but there was NO melting. My bad and sorry if I alarmed anyone.

The outlet reads NEMA 14-50R and 50A-125/250V around the perimeter. There are some references above to "Hubble" outlets and I am an idiot when it comes to these matters, so if some of the more knowledgeable on this thread believe I am need to consider changing this outlet please let me hear from you.

Apart from all that, I've not had any issues with having reduced the output from the charger. As I said before, a non-issue so far.

thanks, I am still using "un-updated" PMCC and probably will never bring it to dealer for update. winter is ok at 40a as garage is cold, during summer time or when garage is above 80f just lower to 32a.

the left side (Y) in this picture looks slightly deformed (very very light melting) - but it could be the lighting in the photo

upgrading it to a hubble plug might not be a bad idea…but it's your call.

Maybe I am missing something but since this is a non-issue for many owners why would a new owner want to sink another $500+ into a device before even taking delivery and trying out the charger that comes for free?
The Porsche Mobile Charger Connect appears in the US Porsche Taycan configurator as a $1,120 option.

Yes I understand that but there is also an option to pay zero and take the charger that comes with the car. That's what I did. It gives a new owner an option to sit on the sidelines while this whole drama plays out. That's the advice I would give someone that is specing a new build.

as @4thPcar notes Standard Equipment on a 2023 Taycan includes a Porsche Mobile Charger + (PMC+) - the $1120 PMCC is an optional charger and one of the most mobile expensive EVSE's on the market (if not the most expensive).

the "included" EVSE (PMC+) is a mobile EVSE that should do 9.6 kW (40 amps) but is also currently handicapped to 20 amps - but is easily overridden by the customer. That will not however address it's shortcomings - but it is "included" with your vehicle purchase so it's "free".

Received this response to my letter from Porsche NA by phone and email:

"Per our conversation today; Charging the vehicle over 20 amps is a safety issue.

The engineers are currently working on a solution and the WMP2 campaign is a temporary fix."

This implies that Porsche NA intends to resolve any safety issue and provide full 40 AMP compatibility to the Porsche Mobile Charger Connect. When? I have no idea.
I'm glad you sent Porsche a letter about their EVSE and shared Porsche's response.
I hope the conclusion/implication "that Porsche NA intends to resolve any safety issue and provide full 40 AMP compatibility to the Porsche Mobile Charger Connect." is true.
The earliest post in this forum about Porsche EVSE overheating that I found was dated July 29, 2020: 240v outlet and charger installed - charger is hot and saying temperature too high, limiting charge
Two years later, August, 2022, Porsche first instituted its "temporary fix" of reducing its EVSE charging rates.
Porsche is still selling its original EVSEs to new and existing Taycan owners.
Based on the lack of speed - two years -- just to come up with a temporary fix for what Porsche describes as a safety issue -- "charging the vehicle over 20 amps", it's unlikely that a permanent solution for existing Porsche EVSEs - replacing them or upgrading their wiring - will happen soon, or at all.
