Hi All,

My race-tex steering wheel has become fairly grim. It's now sticky and unpleasant to hold.
Any suggestions for cleaning it or a recommendation for a company who could?
I am based in Sussex so anywhere in the South East.

I don't have it but that does not sound nice at all. What I have heard is to use any softish nylon brush (maybe a toothbrush) to spruce up but, first a slightly damp microfiber towel to lightly brush over the race Tex. That should help lift any dirt/oil (from hands/use etc).

I have no idea if it will work as I have leather but that's what I had heard works...? Good luck

I like the feel of the race tex but didn’t want it precisely because of concern over the cleaning and wear and tear.

I use a product called SONAX on mine which is sold on amazon - it comes in kit form with soft brush specifically designed for the job -it gets excellent results

I picked up my new GTS ST one week ago, so I'm also interested in the answers to this.

I did a search on YouTube and there are loads of videos on how to clean alcantara, especially steering wheels.

Here are just two...

I just use the Porsche Textile care set.
I keep the brush in the centre armrest and give the wheel (or any racetex area with regular contact) a gentle brush probably once a week, or after a long sweaty drive!
Takes a minute or two at most.

We’ve had the car almost 8 months and the GTS interior still looks and feels brand new, even with a toddler!
The trick is to keep on top of it before it becomes an issue.

It’s pretty easy to get the race tex steering wheel back to mint condition. Here’s my process.

1 - Clean the steering wheel with a microfiber cloth dipped in luke warm water with some mild laundry detergent. Scrub it gently.
2 - Use a new cloth with luke warm clean water and give the wheel another pass.
3 - Dry the wheel with a third piece of cloth.
4 - Use a soft shoe brush and brush work your way all over the wheel.

tada: mint condition raceTex that looks nice and feels even better than when you got the car.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I ended up using Sonax Xtreme, a shoe brush, a repurposed bottle of my wife's moisturiser spray filled with water and several microfibre cloths.

I have posted a before and after shot below. I am pretty pleased the results.

Thanks a lot for the before and after shots. Does the Sonax spray have an odour to it?

What do you use the water for? Could you maybe give us a brief step-by-step explanation of what you did?

Thanks!

Sonax Xtreme has a faint citrus odour ( i think ) - it's bit hard to apply direct so I spraying it on a cloth.
The steps I took:-
  • spray Sonax on a cloth an apply
  • this gets through the shiny, compacted layer
  • brush in
  • apply water as a mist
  • let it soak in
  • remove dirty water with a cloth

The cloth was pretty filthy at the end of this. The end result seems pretty good to me. Maybe the water isn't necessary but I figured there would be water soluble components as well as sonax soluble.
