New SW update Aug 7 2023?

I went to pick up my new to me GTS last night from the dealer (open late on a Sunday!) and after filling out the paperwork and getting ready to go home, they informed me that they couldn't release the car since Porsche had just release an update (Monday morning in Germany) and it was a required update and would take a half day to install. Has anyone heard about this new major update (not an OTA update) and what it's changing? Bad timing/luck on my part!

Sorry if this is covered elsewhere already, I did a quick look around but didn't see anything. This is my first Porsche, so maybe Porsche has a bug fix/readme.txt type page somewhere?

There’s no such thing. Your car; you decide whether to update or not.

I have a ‘22 and I’ve never done a single update, and have no plans to do any in the future.

Why don't you want updates? OTA updates are great so they can fix potential issues with the car without you having to go to the dealer. I don't get it.

Except for when they don’t work right, brick the car, etc. My car works perfectly. Why mess with a good thing?

I have all the updates on my 23 CT4. Not bricked. So when they released an update to fix issues with charingcurves and temperature in the battery to keep the longevity of the battery. You will not install it? Do you not update your phone, computer and other electronics either? Your loss.

You must be new here and haven’t read the prior threads about update problems. I’ll pass.

There are no systemic issues with the longevity of the batteries in our cars that requires updating.

I love updates - always get 'em - never had a problem.

The latest couple of updates have improved charging speed, and maybe, to some extent, my total miles (still at 260-265 miles with when charged 100%, after 2 years of use and ~15,000 miles).

WNW2 was the most recent update that was performed OTA. The update prior was many moons ago so I can't imagine why the dealer is holding up your vehicle. Maybe you are ahead of the rest of us, or your dealer is confused.

There is when the car is at the dealer and being prepared for sale.

Not all updates or campaigns are advised to the customer and can be routinely carried out when next at the dealership. True for any Porsche.

Personal choice but I see no point in disabling OTA updates given the nature of them (low risk).

I didn't say noone has bricked their car after updates. But I would still say that it is worth it for fixes, new features and so one. Porsche is better then any of us to say if the car needs an update or not. If they release an update for the HV battery I would say that who am I to say that there is no need for it. And since software is such an essential part of an electric car I would always keep it updated.

And no I am not new here or in the Taycan world.

The car is 2nd hand? Then there is no Stuttgart guidance full stop on delivery.
which then either means 2 things, your dealer is not a fully equipped reseller and needs a fully equipped dealer to update your vehicle / reset service interval as he doesn’t have the right equipment, or something is wrong and the car is not ready for delivery.

I hope EVs don't get like phones and computers and have obsolescence thrust apon them by updates.
I bought an iMac with the intention of only using it as a music streaming source - I like the big screen for album artwork.
Software updates have made it so slow to boot I don't use it any more - in fact I have gone back to LPs and CDs for listening for speed.
It happens to 'phones too.

The salient point is that any purchase should continue to work as well when used as it did new - not be deliberately or accidentally hobbled subsequently by software.

I wrote a whole suite of routines to run and data log a wind tunnel in 1981 on a machine with 128k of RAM.
It couldn't do any graphic screen candy results display, obviously, but there was nothing I would want from an analysis today that it couldn't do fast enough and the numerical results were all we needed anyway. It could be made prettier but not more effective.

That iMac is many orders of magnitude more powerful than the Macsym 2 I used back then but has been rendered effectively useless by software updated I did not need.

I never use automatic updates on anything.

Updates cannot be mandated.. and should always be a 'user choice'.

I work in the tech industry and we develop firmware/ application updates that are then deployed to millions of smart devices - but we have always retained the core belief that 'It is a consumer's choice'.

Updates may be recommended by the manufacturer (as they know their product best), but the final choice has to be the consumers.

Any goods when sold should function as expected - that is a minimum expectation !

I do not debate the value of updates; and all my tech products usually have the latest updates (well, most of them actually run on beta and daily dev updates) - but the core principles of 'consumer choice' remain...
