A problem Tesla will soon face is losing the advantage of being the contemporary electric vehicle pioneer. Legacy automakers are a little bit behind, but they're not wasting any time. So, should you make the move in advance, ignore Tesla, and pick a brand-new or used Porche Taycan? Let's look at what today's numbers say.
...
Porsche and some of its dealers are getting ready for the facelift to come out because some deals have started popping up online. Brand-new Taycan Turbo units, for example, are offered at $20,000 off MSRP in Beverly Hills. The fact that there's no markup any longer is a win and surprising. But selling below MSRP?! Well, that's new!

But things start looking even better when you go online to look for used units and figure out that some lesser Taycan models, like the entry-level unit or the 4S, are now priced at around $65,000 or less! Owning such a machine starts to feel more appropriate at this point.
...
But as we move closer to the value of a used Taycan, we see one-owner Model S sedans with a 100-kWh battery pack and a price of approximately $43,000. That feels like a steal as long as the energy storage unit is in good condition and the CarFax is clean.

It gets harder and harder to seriously consider the Taycan as my or your first or next EV.
...
Thus, unless you're a hardcore Porsche fan and can't see anything else parked in your driveway, the Tesla Model S is the obvious option. It's just the better car, be it brand-new, certified pre-owned, or used. Some nicer cabin materials and a two-speed gearbox do not justify spending more to get the CCS Combo 1-equipped Taycan.

I'm sorry, Porsche. But that's the truth.

The author is certainly entitled to his or her opinion. But after riding in and driving some Teslas, the Taycan is the right choice for me.

in my mind the teslas are the camrys of EVs, great cars that sell well.
the taycan is a fine high end car.
an expensive car not really intended for the masses.

over the years porsches sold many 911 and it's cousins despite it's much higher price points.

there were many fine cars out there buy for a select few only a 911 would do.

What a ridiculous thing to say!

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but an actual auto journalist stating his opinion as the final say on the matter is bonkers.

Especially when you look at his Taycan pros (cabin materials and a 2 speed gearbox....wtf???).

He forgot the two charge ports as well… now that’s something Tesla doesn’t have!

He also forgot the car says "PORSCHE" on the ground outside the car when you get in and out. I am sure Tesla does not do that. I find this an important extra so that I remember what kind of car I have.

I was kind of nodding along with the article when it was comparing the notion of new versus used. I scoured the country for used Taycans and if I'd found one in a configuration that I would be happy with I would have gone that route without thinking twice. The only reason I didn't is that apparently my tastes and the tastes of the Taycan purchasing public don't overlap much.

However, this is where the author lost me completely:

the Tesla Model S is the obvious option. It's just the better car,
The argument seems to hinge nearly entirely on price, in which case buy one of the Korean EVs.

It’s obviously the right choice for all us owners BUT it’s not worth the premium over the Tesla, no way, we do it because we can not because it’s the smarter choice …

Same here! I created a spreadsheet for every used 4CT in the U.S. back in August.
Out of 63, only two met my min spec.
And with hindsight, I should have added RAS to my min, since now that I've experience it, I wouldn't want a Taycan w/o it. (Granted, I haven't driven w/ vs w/o, but the Taycan is so surprisingly agile at low speeds for such a long wide car that RAS has to be playing a noticeable role.)

So although used Taycans can be a great deal, for a buyer who is picky about some functional options, the available choices out there are slim to none.
I was amazed that so many Taycan buyers had spec'ed $100k++++ vehicles with many thousands of dollars of cosmetic options yet without my min spec.
Then again, all those Taycan buyers probably would have looked at my min spec with equal befuddlement!

There, FIFY.

(Yes, I'm being pedantic. But there is some truth to that; there are 'flippers' who configured their cars for max resale value (or quick resale), 'eccentrics' who owned their cars "for a laugh", and 'normies' who specced their cars to their needs and haven't yet put them up for sale. Besides, rule #1 of used car buying is "compromise"; you can't be picky and score a deal. I reckon that if I looked now at all the used 4CT/4sCT in the US, I wouldn't find my preferred config for a price I'd be willing to pay for a secondhand car.)

Excellent point -- might be some self-selection bias there, given that sellers of those briefly owned Taycans might be disproportionately some combination of disappointed in their spec and/or frequently buying the latest blingy thing. (Although I suspect many also were disappointed by the CCS1 dysfunctionality and/or the Porsche software quirkiness.)

Eh, I would certainly prefer to spend less money. I'm not buying a Taycan because it's some kind of flex. If I thought the Tesla was better I would buy a Tesla. I think the Taycan drives better than a Tesla, looks better than a Tesla outside and especially inside, and has the added benefit of not being a four wheeled MAGA hat.

I was amazed that so many Taycan buyers had spec'ed $100k++++ vehicles with many thousands of dollars of cosmetic options yet without my min spec.

Oh absolutely. And the few that met my minimum requirements had a lot of other stuff I couldn't make myself spend the money on.

Definitely possible; I don't know what motivates people to configure their cars they way they do. I do know that just starting from a "Cross Turismo in Carmine Red" is extremely limiting before you even start looking at options.

Yes, same here -- the used 4CT I bought both met my min spec and had all sorts of options with absolutely zero value to me.
So going by the prices in effect for MY2022, and adding in the typical dealer fee I would have paid in my home state, the original build was a stunning $137,160.
Valuing the options of any interest to me at 100% of their MSRP, the value of that build to me was $127,200.
That's almost ten grand in options that I would have willingly exchanged for a single Lego minifig.
However, I paid $97,145 plus cross-country transportation of ~$1,600.
Also 18,375 miles with a warranty expiration at the end of 2025.
Whether that is a good deal overall is debatable. And that's of course within the larger context of whether any Porsche can ever be considered a good deal!
But ~3.5k miles later I'm happy with my decision. Whether I eventually replace this Taycan with another Taycan will depend on whether the BMW i5 Touring is coming to North American (okay, so it isn't, but maybe if I mention the possibility over and over again it will actually come true?) and how the Audi A6/RS6 e-tron hatchback/avant turns out (after its apparently increasingly long delayed debut)
