Hello all,

4 months of worry free driving have come to an end.
WARNING AND BRAKE ASSISTANCE LIMITED. (No cruise control or adaptive regen etc)

in short Radar was chipped (a pen tip sized prick) and Porsche claims it’s an external factor not a design flaw and therefore not covered by warranty.
$9k to replace radar unit.
Other than making an insurance claim anyone else have success making Porsche pay for this?

I think it’s hysterical that a part that is directly in the line of debris fire is a) so poorly designed and b)not warrantied at least in some minor fashion.

TIA

I Find difficult to see why Porsche should pay for that.
Insurance claim really.... But...

Porsche should have designed better protection for it given where it's located (a sacrificial screen perhaps). It's no wonder insurance premiums on these are skyrocketing with badly thought out design elements like this.

I agree that it is a huge target for road debris. I was wondering if it could be covered by PPF such as Xpel without loss of function.

The entire system doesnt cost $9K. Not sure how they can justify that for a part that should be plug and play.

Really? Less than 20k miles and a part that controls all adaptive functions, even dumb cruise control, is lost/damaged from normal highway driving and I am supposed to cough up $9k bc of a rock chip???

My iPhone has the ability to apply a thin film that absorbs drops and strikes with much better protection.

Yeah I was just responding to someone else that iPhone clear covers are amazingly tough and resist large impacts much more easily than this thing did. Possible invention here to sell to these companies

This ridiculous little chip. This radar is positioned in the perfect spot to ingest road debris. IMO poor design. I can understand the degradation of systems but there's no reason it should downgrade without still allowing "dumb" cruise control but no. I have nothing. Very poorly thought out.

I think I'll ask the PPF installer what they think. I would not have thought the location of that small chip would impact the system so much !!

That's what the Porsche dealer quoted for the whole system. Said the last guy this happened to did an insurance claim.
What price have you been quoted?

I did not opt for this feature as part of my spec.

So "entire system doesn't cost $9k" was not based on any experience or hearsay regarding said system?

I'd say it's a design flaw as the system is not "fit for purpose"
However...... I'd also say that a tiny chip like that is an excuse for the fault, and that the fault actually is something else that is covered by warranty, but they haven't looked into it.

In my humble opinion

Amazed that such a small chip on the periphery has knocked the whole system out.

Can you get any camera view at all?

Also wondering if it can be fixed in any way?
I've seen glass repairs to chips on windscreens and watches that look perfect.
Could it potentially work again with a repair?
